Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Number of Articles: 1
Word count: 900 words
We publish a magazine aimed at disabled people, their families, carers and professionals working with disabled people
Brief:
There are plenty of opportunities for disabled people to engage in the arts
from taking up simple hobbies such as drawing and painting through to becoming
involved in amateur dramatics. As well as the satisfaction of creating something, disabled
people can also find new social outlets and learn new skills.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please include:
Describe around 10 ideas about becoming involved in arts, such as taking up
drawing and painting or dance etc – or following the arts such as theatre or
concerts.
Each description should end with one or more website urls for readers to follow-
up or find further information – or contact to get involved themselves. (We are
ideally, looking for disability focused opportunities.) We also require urls etc for
Scottish opportunities – since we publish a Scottish version of the magazine.
Details about how the various arts have been adapted to the needs of variously
disabled people.
Explain how arts can take a person ‘out of themselves’ or make them think
differently - as well as providing new social experiences.
Some arts you might like to mention could include: painting, drawing, dance,
drama, theatre, music, woodwork and ceramics etc.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please note:
Please use any relevant stats, facts or figures – but make sure that they are
properly sourced.
Introduce your piece with a ‘lede’ paragraph of one or two sentences.
Keep paragraphs simple and compact (65 words max).
Make your point quickly. Who, what, when, where and how? These facts need to
be in the first portion of your submission.
Write to the reader. Our audience is primarily made up of disabled people and
their carers as well as healthcare professionals in the disability field.
Keep it positive. For example, regarding disability, we rarely say: “Suffering
from…” when we could say “Living with…” ‘We exist to inspire our readers
and empower them with ‘answers and solutions’.
Add any helpful information (at the end of your submission) such as telephone
numbers and web addresses of organisations relevant to the subject you have
written about. (Please no hyperlinks – they do not work in a printed publication.
Use reasonably short web URLs starting with www.)
Add any interesting/related facts, styled to small boxouts.
