Description
Experience Level: Expert
Estimated project duration: I would expect it to be 1-2 wks (perhaps less) in the first instance. However we wish to sustain the site so ad hoc ongoing work is very likely.
I manage the website British Religion in Numbers (http://www.brin.ac.uk). The original site personnel have moved from the University of Manchester to other organisations. We would like the site to be secured and then for the site to be migrated to a host to be determined.
We would like the site to be health-checked with the following particularly requested:
• Advise on whether there is a free or subscription-based automatic way to keep the core software, themes and plugins on WordPress up to date
• Remove anything not required for the daily running of the site
• Check that security software is appropriate
• Make sure that the hosting server has an up-to-date version of PHP, and that it’s compatible with our themes and plugins. Identify where there is a need for liaison with the University of Manchester IT officers in this regard
• Check whether the University is supplying good offsite backup (we use updraft to my Dropbox account at present)
• Transfer Google spreadsheets in the transfer the Google spreadsheets in the brin.ac.uk/figures section to a standalone Google account. Google Analytics are also linked to a personal email account and should al be trasonsferred to an independent BRIN Google account
• Make fixes to the advanced custom field search of the BRIN source database, at: http://www.brin.ac.uk/search/ to enable search
• Add ‘BRIN is funded by the British Academy as a British Academy Research Project’ including the British Academy logo, either to the home page or footer of each page depending on feasibility
• Assess the extent of broken links to non-BRIN URLs, and of missing images or tables, especially in the ‘News’ sub-site
• Rectify the failure of some long URLs to wrap around, thereby bleeding into the right-hand side bar, via CSS
• Restore automatic generation of IDs for new entries in the source database
• Switch to a sans serif font to update the style. Restyle some of the buttons away from the default grey ones, and check pagination: make the page buttons more prominent
• Check the additional security offered by the University of Manchester - lock down of FTP, etc
• Check what is needed and sort out immediate requirements in terms of updates
• Identify needed client-side work with regard to site updates. Create an FTP account with the University of Manchester
• Report back with any recommendations, to ensure that the site is secure enough for migration
• Liaise with site directors regarding migration to new University host. Transfer files to new host.
