Description
Experience Level: Expert
Are you a whizz on the web with the technical stuff that's so crucial to the success of a web business?
I have a few websites built with and running on different platforms. So I need someone on-hand whenever necessary, with quite a varied level of experience to stop me pulling out my hair and help make my technical problems vanish!
The Basic Tasks
These are just a few of the type of activities you would need to be able to do:
• Backup website(s)
• Set up redirects.
• .htaccess edits.
• Move websites to different hosting companies.
• Troubleshoot technical issues in your sleep! There are always technical problems cropping up. Someone who can minimise them and deal with them quickly would truly save my sanity and stop my girlfriend from leaving me because I've gone bald from pulling out all my hair.
• Anything that comes under the banner of 'website administration'.
But you'll also need to be able to do much more than that. As I mentioned, I have sites in running on different platforms, so the above are just the very basic tasks.
Further Experience Required (only bid on this if you have experience in most of these areas):
• Volusion: Extensive knowledge of ecommerce using Volusion, including (but not limited to) adding tracking codes, troubleshooting and the technical aspects of design in Volusion.
• Wordpress: How to build a Wordpress site with a custom theme, how to edit themes, possibly even create plugins and working to prevent malicious attacks.
• Indexing: In-depth knowledge of Search Engine indexing and sitemaps. In particular I want to avoid the indexing of duplicate URLs - this is mainly to do with ecommerce where there are many ways this can happen.
• A/B and Multivariate Testing: You'll have experience using either Visual Website Optimizer and/or Google Website Optimizer to improve sales/leads. Examples of how you improved a site using one of these tools would be useful.
• Tracking: Advice on tracking conversions from affiliate sales. This may include the implementation of tracking scripts.
• Adobe Contribute (Desirable but not essential): If you have experience using Contribute this could be useful but not essential.
Design
With all this technical stuff, there will be some creative input needed in some places but I understand people who've chosen the technical route aren't usually gifted with design skills as well. So why am I asking about it? I find that most great technical wizards know and work with funky design dudes. So if you do work with someone closely who has experience in the following, please let me know:
• Landing Page Creation: Creating high converting landing pages - sometimes in the current theme and formatting of a site, sometimes completely from scratch. You'll be familiar with wireframing tools and can whip one up in super quick time!
• Creative Design: Creation of adverts (static and flash), icons, illustrations and all manner of design.
Personal Qualities
• Reliable
• Trustworthy
• Helpful (for example, I may ask you to make a video showing me how to do something. You'll only need a microphone and something like Jing, which is free. Are you able to do this? If not, please do not bid).
• Passionate. I love what I do - you should too. Why? Because if we both love what we do, we work easier together and can bounce ideas off each other. That's the kind of working relationship that brings great results and that means more money for both of us.
• Happy (it's important to be happy and enjoy what you do!).
The best responses to this job will be those of you that say exactly where you have experience (using all the bullet points above as a reference point) and where you don't. Examples for each, where appropriate, will help.
The first jobs
Your initial bid should be for these two tasks (with a view to further ongoing ad-hoc work):
1) Fix an error that's stopping a web pages in a subdirectory from being viewed.
2) Backup an ecommerce site so that I can access the files in a remote location away from the hosting company or on my desktop.
A possible further job should we both get on and want to work together some more:
Assist with the technical aspects in going from oscommerce website to a Volusion powered site. This will include setting up redirects from the original oscommerce URLs to new URLs. It may also include design tweaks, which is where your and/or your colleague's design and Volusion skills will be used.
And there will be more work too.
In your bids please give as much useful information and examples of your experience in relation to what I've asked for above.
Ultimately, I am really hoping to find someone I can get on with and work with on an ongoing basis, like part of my team.
