Remote sql server access

I have a screen scraper which rips data from a webpage using VBA code in excel, this writes the data into a database on SQL Server Management Studio.

I would like to be able to access this database from remote computers which are not on the same network, provided the correct credentials are used to do so.

I believe this involves opening up ports on the host computers firewall? Alternative solutions welcome
