Hello,

I need help with redirecting an old blog to a new blog address.

The old blog was hosted by Wordpress and available at blog.mydomain.co.uk – we’ve recently migrated it to self hosted Wordpress on the same server as the main website and so it's now available at www.mydomain.co.uk/blog. The main website is built in Joomla.

Both the Joomla and Wordpress sites have native SEF (search engine friendly URLs) enabled and both have an .htaccess file with rewrite instructions. In addition we’ve set up a sub-domain with a redirect for blog.mydomain.co.uk to go to www.mydomain.co.uk/blog.

What we want is for links on third party websites and search engines pointing to blog posts hosted on the old site (i.e. blog.mydomain.co.uk/articleURL to instead be redirected to www.mydomain.co.uk/blog/articleURL. At present if you go to one of these URLs it generates a Server Error 500 message.

The problem seems to be that the native SEF (which are essential for SEO) are interacting with each other and so we may need to alter both .htaccess files (in public_html root and in blog folder)? We’ve tried setting up additional 301 redirects on a one by one basis but this didn’t work either (error 500 again). Efforts to change the .htaccess file have also not resolved the problem.

The solution to this is probably very simple to someone who knows what they are doing!
