Brief summary:
I need a server-client application to enable off site back up for businesses.
The software will utilise shadow copies to back up open files.
- be able to back up microsoft exchange
- be able to back up ms sql databases
- be able to configure backup schedules
- send daily reports of backups including any skipped files and issues.
easy to use GUI
This is the core functionality but I am not entirely sure what functionality is possible so would be open to suggest features beyond that mentioned above.
I think it would be useful for the data to be encrypted, compressed and checked for errors, either using CRC or if you can suggest another method.
The initial backup will back up everything selected in the GUI options, after that only the files that have changed should be backed up.
There will need to be a 2 week history of files stored on the server so that if a client deletes a file and a backup runs before they realise, a copy will remain on the server for 2 weeks. This could work like the recycle bin on a pc and then empty the contents of the bin that are 2 weeks old or older.
Project Type: What kind of work do you need done?
Software related (Includes desktop applications and internet websites)
Project Parts: What do you want the seller to do on this project?
Requirements: The seller will analyze the problem and propose a software-based solution to the problem.
Programming: The programmer will take the requirements and translate them into the language of the computer (and test it).
User installation: The installer will move the software from the place it was created (which is called the development or QC environment) to where you will use it (which is called the production environment). The installer then tests the software to make sure that the installation was done properly and completely.
Req. Doc. Type: What kind of documentation do you want for this project?
Formal documentation - After talking back and forth, the seller creates a formal document and/or prototype, as follows:
Prototype: The analyst will create a non-working mockup of all pages/screens in the final software. Creating a prototype makes it easier for the user to visualize the final software, and reduces misunderstandings.
Requirements Document: The analyst will create a document describing everything the final software will do (other than what is documented in the prototype...if the buyer required one).
Program Type: What kind of software should the seller create (and/or install)?
A desktop or server program: This software runs on a user's own PC/workstation, or on a server.
Desktop / server program info
Size of application: How many screens/forms need to be created/edited in this application?
Other info:Having used other programs it tends to involve a window much like windows explorer with tick boxes and you select the files and folders you wish to back up, including exchange, system state, ms sql as options.
Programming Language: What programming language(s) do you want your application written in?
I don't know what language (and need the programmer's assistance to suggest it).
Other info:I will be running it on a windows server, probably dedicated or colocated but have no idea what programming language would be best.
Ideally something lightweight and fast and reliable
Operating system(s) What operating systems(s) do you want your application to work on?
I do know the operating system(s):
Microsoft Windows -- version(s): 2000, xp, vista, 7,2003, 2008 server
Misc. details: I will only be running it on windows based servers and will only be backing up windows client OS's.
If you could make it possible to backup MAC OS X without it increasing the cost much then great, but I have very few apple clients so this is not important to me.
Database: Will this project include a database?
I'm not sure (and need the programmer to advise me).
Other info:i would imagine the server version of the software would need a database to keep track of whos data is stored where and keeping track of the 2 weeks data in case of accidental client file deletion
Installation Program: Does the programmer need to create an installation program?
Yes AND the program will be installed on multiple computers and needs to work on all of them.
Details: the server version will need to be easy to set up and configure. I will be backing up to individual servers and then backing up each server. When i get more clients I will duplicate this process so the client and server software will need to be wise to this and allow me to easily point the client to the correct server somehow.
the client version will need an installer that is easy to configure the backup on windows client based systems from 2000 onwards.
Legal: 1) I require complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done (so that I may modify it in the future).
2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables):
2a) If there are any server-side deliverables (intended to only exist in one place in the Buyer's environment) then they must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition (unless specified elsewhere by the Buyer).
2b) All other software (including but not limited to any desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute) must include a software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request (unless specified elsewhere by the Buyer).
3) All deliverables will be considered \"work made for hire\" under U.K. and U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased.
3b) No part of the deliverable may contain any copyright restricted 3rd party components (including GPL, GNU, Copyleft, etc.) unless all copyright ramifications are explained AND AGREED TO by the buyer on the site per the seller's Seller Legal Agreement.
