Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: Not sure
I am looking to use some GPS trackers for a website I am developing to track vehicles and update their location to the website.
I am therefore looking for either:
- Someone to research currently available (available to ship to the UK) GPS trackers and whether they can be customised to send data to my website (e.g. via a HTTPS POST) at a set interval.
- Someone to design/supply a suitable GPS tracker including CE certification
- An iPhone/Android App which can be used to update the location to the site periodically
I am pretty confident that an off-the-shelf tracker would do what I need, but I'm hoping someone with previous experience will be able to suggest some suitable options.
The website has been designed with an API to accept a HTTPS POST with JSON data containing a unique hardware ID and location information.
** GPS Hardware Solution **
Ideally I don't want to use some 3rd party fleet/management software - it only needs to report location data periodically to my website. I'd also consider using particle.io SIM cards.
In terms of the hardware, here is a rough guide to my specifications:
- Something USB powered would be ideal as this would allow it to be used/charged from a mains USB supply, a USB socket or a USB power bank
- Update rate of every 10-15 minutes is sufficient
- It doesn't need to have an internal battery but this would be nice to have if it doesn't increase the cost too much
- I would like it to have an on/off switch (so the user can turn it off for privacy reasons), but unplugging it would be OK
- It should be enclosed and have status LEDs (e.g. for Power/GPS/GPRS signal)
- The hardware needs to be CE Certified for sale/use in the UK
- Preferably a UK supplier
What I need is for someone to do the necessary research as I don't have time to build/design my own GPS tracker so I am hoping to use off-the-shelf GPS tracker hardware and modify/customise it to work with the website. I will also accept proposals for custom hardware/software development - but they must be CE certified.
For the hardware GPS tracker I would like the successful bidder to provide a report showing:
- A selection of GPS trackers that match (or nearly match) the specifications above that will work with my website
- The associated pricing (hardware costs, ongoing costs e.g. GPRS/service costs) and delivery times (to the UK)
- Pros/cons of each solution
- A recommendation on the best option
** App Solution **
For the App approach, I would require an Android/iPhone app with the following features.
If we were to use an App it would be very simple to begin with:
- Display a unique hardware ID which can be entered into the website to link the App to the website
- Ability to enable/disable tracking (e.g. slide to enable/disable periodic tracking)
- Small embedded map for showing the current location
- Button for sending a manual update
- App does a HTTPS POST to the website API on a periodic update or on manual update
I look forward to your proposals.

Have you thought of using a mobile phone and an app such as GPSLogger(https://gpslogger.app/)
Sam S.26 Jun 2018I hadn't originally thought of a mobile App solution - but I think it would be a good solution. I have updated the job description and would also like to see proposals for Android/iPhone app development.
