Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
We are looking to build a GPS or 6 DOF tracking system for use with children during outdoor fitness sessions (on a field for example).
The purpose of the development is not to track geographic positioning, but to capture physical user activity. In this respect a 6DOF device may be a suitable substitute for the GPS (magnetometer + accelerometer).
The device must provide the following information:
(a) Total distance covered during the session
(b) Maximum and average speed of the user (sprints for example - distance and duration)
(c) Resting time (no activity)
(d) Number of steps taken during the session.
User activity captured needs to be sent wireless to an App at regular intervals during use (every 15 seconds for example). A dedicated tablet or phone will run the App.
The maximum distance between the Tablet or Phone and users will be about 250m. A suitable licence-free RF technology needs to be selected for that purpose. The maximum number of Users in the RF network is 20.
In summary, a GPS chip such as the MKT3339 (or similar) or a 6 DOF sensor such as the LSM303DLH and a suitable RF transmitter are required. A pedometer may also be required depending on the functionality of the technology selected. In addition, an App capable of receiving the data strings and displaying individual User data must be developed.
Hardware:
1) We are looking to build a small footprint, low energy embedded system eventually, but we are happy to accept lower priced offers to design an Arduino based prototype initially.
2) The system must be designed around low-cost components for volume manufacture. We are looking to manufacture the final board design at under $30 each in volume. The successful contractor will be required to provide a BOM indicating component prices.
3) The device must be as small and as energy efficient as possible. Battery recommendations must be provided by the contractor for at least 6 hours use before change or recharge.
Software:
1) An App is required to capture and display individual user data in text form. Full scope of the app will be discussed with suitable candidates (but we are happy to accept a fairly simple interface).
2) A graphical "playback" of user movements is required using the session data on a mapping type display. This should effectively trace the user movements from the start to the end of the session.
We have indicated a price of £5000 for this development, but we will accept higher or lower quotes based on experience and availability. The development needs to be completed within 6 weeks.
In Summary of Requirements:
1) A tracking system using either GPS or 6 DOF technology.
2) Wireless transmission up to 250m of the data to a phone or tablet.
3) An App to display captured data.
