1. Introduction and background
The Historical Dance Society (formerly The Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society) was founded to promote public education in historical dance from the 12th to 20th centuries. The society is a leading international organisation committed to high standards of theoretical research as the foundation for reconstruction of dances and understanding of the context of dance culture. Its core activities are the organisation of workshops and summer schools each year, a biennial conference, the publication of instruction books and music recordings in support of the practical reconstruction of social and theatre dances from original sources, and publication of Historical Dance, the leading journal for research in the subject.
We aspire to be the ‘go to’ organization for historical dance and its dance music (ie the first place people like the BBC or the Globe come to for dance information).
Our values are:
• Research
• Teaching
• Doing
See our website at www.dhds.org.uk
The society has changed its name from The Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society (DHDS) to the Historical Dance Society (HDS). Amongst other reasons for this is a desire to encourage more younger people to take part in the Society. The current logo (below) is thought not to be up to date.
The organisation’s brand assists us to occupy a clear and different place in the dance world. Other dance societies with similar focus exist at a local level and usually concentrate on teaching or performance, often of particular historical periods. Many of these utilise the resources and expertise of the Historical Dance Society.
2. Objectives for this design brief
Currently the existing publications, fliers and other documents have no uniform look and feel and creating a consistent identity for the society would help support our aim to be regarded as the premier resource (the ‘go to’ organization) for historical dance research, education, information and support. It is also essential that the Historical Dance Society appeals to a new – and younger - audience as the current membership is an ageing one. The new logo should be attractive and should portray the organization as:
• authoritative - the ‘go to’ organisation for historical dance
• approachable
• neutral in terms of conservatism
• stylish
3. Assumptions
1. Funds remain limited for use on marketing materials, so printing is likely to be in 2-colour with limited colour printing on occasion, so it should be usable in black or the society’s signature colour.
2. The logo will be reproduced in various media (see 5 below), so it needs to be available in both vector graphics formats, with text as curves to ensure consistent reproduction independent of installed typefaces, and lossless bitmap formats at several resolutions. (Given a suitable vector master we have the resources to convert it as needed.)
4. Logo
We are generally agreed that the new logo should avoid using figures which are period specific since we cover a wide number of periods. Many stylized figures are not especially ‘historical’. For these reasons we should probably avoid using figures in any logo.
However, there is a problem with the quantity of text: when the logo needs to be scaled down (e.g. CD) it will become difficult to read. At its smallest, the logo is sometimes less than 20 mm across.
The current DHDS logo sometimes includes the strap line. However, this information may be detached from the logo itself and there may be no control over its font. The new logo should allow for such qualifying text to be included but not as part of the logo itself.
The charity number isn’t part of our brand identity, so shouldn’t be in the logo.
5. Key places we use the logo
1. medium size, high resolution (vector): publications, flyers, brochures, letterhead, comps slip
2. very large, high resolution (vector): posters and banners
3. medium size, low resolution (bitmap): website, Facebook, ...
4. small, low resolution (bitmap): PayPal invoices (with shape restrictions), email sigs
5. small, high resolution (vector): CDs
