Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: 1 - 6 months
Information for the business: We develop game supplements for tabletop roleplaying games, such as Dungeons & Dragons.
Industry: Entertainment
Design details: We are seeking one or more concept artists/digital illustrators for an early 2018 product. This project will require the creation of illustrations of Magic Items as per the kind you might find in any tabletop roleplaying game manual. In other words, depictions of unusual or interesting objects, items, and equipment. These will be displayed in a book that is going to be available in both digital and physical formats. Each such item will need to be provided in both .TIFF and .PSD formats. We're looking for each item to be completed to 300 DPI, although their dimensions will vary as per the needs of each individual piece (see below).
Our budget for this component of the project is £2,000 at this time. This figure excludes budgets associated with other types of art. We're looking to get 100 illustrations completed for this figure, which equates to £20 per piece. This may be handled as a flat rate, with a single artist completing all of the illustrations and just being paid the same for smaller and larger ones (completing an equal number of each), or else it may be the case that we break illustrations down into size brackets based on how large they appear within the product. The total budget for this portion of the project may be up to twice what is stated above depending on various factors - although that would relate to more items being commissioned rather than the same number at a much higher rate.
This project would be undertaken on the basis of Work-for-Hire, meaning that we would reserve the ownership and rights to everything created as part of this project, as well as the briefs, concepts, and everything associated with them. That said, we're happy for any artist who works with us to use illustrations that they have developed on our behalf in their online or physical portfolios, as well as to send such illustrations out to prospective clients.
As a company, we're quite accommodating. We don't pay the highest rates in the industry, however we're able to work with the same freelancers time and time again because they know that we'll be: Courteous, provide extremely clear and concise briefs, offer carefully considered feedback very early in the design process, pay promptly and without quibbling, are flexible in when/how we handle payments, and can provide a larger volume of work than is all-too-often the case.
In terms of our expectations, we'd like to undertake a paid art test (i.e. commission a single illustration at full price) to see how we get on with any prospective freelancer, and how they get on with us. We're hoping to get 6-8 of these illustrations completed per week. This may be handled through a single freelancer if they're extremely reliable and prolific, or else through a handful if necessary.
If this position interests you, please don't hesitate to get in touch and we can start talking more specifics, take a look at your portfolio/past experience, and run through any questions you might have. Thanks for reading.
Target audience: Tabletop roleplaying game hobbyists/enthusiasts
Ideas for the visual style: Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, fantasy art in general
Extra notes: These products are to be used in tabletop roleplaying games similar to Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder, a passing familiarity with either would be beneficial - although a strong interest in fantasy or background in fantasy would also be more that adequate.
