Description
Design details:
Tech: 6 x 9 inch, one-piece book cover with spine for a 100,000 word novel (approx. 300 pages), PDF format. Front: Title, author, graphics that grab and suggest the novel's theme (see below). Spine: Title and author. Back: Blurb, author photo, barcode. All according to Create Space specs, 300 DPI, not to exceed upload size.
Please include, if you can, a rough idea of how many hours this might take and whether you would like to read the novel. Am happy to let you read it, but can't pay for hours of reading time! This would be a one-off payment with no royalties thereafter, but full credit will be given. Your name/web on the back cover and inside in the front matter.
More details:
I am looking for designer who is on my wavelength and has a style I think will fit with my books. I would like to find someone I can also work with in the future on other projects and slowly develop a 'house style' for all my titles.
I am looking for a professional book cover that draws on my inspiration, the Romney Marshes, in south-east Kent, UK. There are many images out there online to see where I am coming from. (There is no village in reality, but there is the church, the landscape, the mist and mystery of the place.)
I am looking for a cover that sums up the main themes of the novel, the atmospheric landscape and the awakening of one man's sexuality. However, danger and evil should also be there and, in this story, it's represented with crows, as these birds are used to select the sacrificial victim in an ancient superstition that the village in the novel lives by.
Target audience: Readers of mystery/Gothic/gay literature
Ideas for the visual style: Suggesting rural/modern Gothic with very subtle gay undertones. Simple, but says it all.
Things to avoid: Overtly gay images, blood and guts, cliches.
Where the design will be used: Print and Kindle
Extra notes: Even more details and story synopsis:
I expect the book interior to be print ready by around April 2017, but would like to have a fixed cover design well before that for pre-publicity etc. I publish via Create Space and use 6 x 9 inch American book format. I'd expect my designer to be able to work with their requirements and specs. I'd need a print-ready cover that I can upload in one piece.
As for this job: 'The Saddling' is my eighth novel and my 11th book. Previously, my covers have been designed by a variety of people and, if I can find a book cover designer who has what I am looking for, I may well commission new covers for previously released titles, in re-editions.
'The Saddling' is a mixed genre novel. It is a slowly building thriller, with a Gothic atmosphere (set in the present day in a village living in the past), that leads to a potentially horrific climax, though it is not a 'blood and guts' horror. As always with my novels, there is a gay undertone. I this case, the main character comes to terms with his sexuality as he meets characters in the remote village and progresses through the story. Some parts are mildly homoerotic but it is not a 'gay novel' whatever that is. There are moments, but no sex and no talk of 'gay', though that theme is the main character's emotional through line development.
The background 'message' or theme is the power of organised religion (the Saddling ritual is compared with the killing of gay teenagers in Middle Eastern countries, simply because they are born gay and in the wrong place at the wrong time).

Brief synopsis
'The Saddling' is a classic story of the unwitting victim straying into dark and tortuous affairs.
The protagonist is a techie twenty-something (25) man who, under the insistence of his wealthy aunt from whom he stands to inherit if he is successful, has become obsessed with discovering the reason why his forebears suddenly left their village in Romney Marsh (Kent, UK) and moved away in 1912.
In reality his aunt plans for him to become the final victim of a ritual sacrifice, conducted every ten years, in which a male village adolescent is murdered to prevent devastating storms. This ritual started centuries before when, in a terrible storm and flood, Tom’s ancestor, the local cleric, accidentally killed the son of a villager called Blacklocks, at which point the storm subsided.
Over the centuries the Blacklocks family have become the village cult leaders and the village has largely retreated from the developing modern world. Tom’s aunt and the current Blacklocks are conspiring together to make Tom the fitting last victim and end the cycle of revenge. Tom’s forebears left the village to escape the ritual slaughter of their child who had been chosen; an unpardonable ‘sin’.
