Description
Experience Level: Entry
Arty Lobster Ltd is a company that specializes in the creation of unique and customized pet sculptures, through 3D printing. The process is simple : a customer sends us pictures of their pets from every angle, an illustrator makes a 3D model out of it, we send the preview to the customer and, if it pleases them, we print it. They can ask for corrections and adjustments.
For an artist, there are seven steps to this job :
1. Before you start - We give you access to your own folder at dropbox named after you (e.g. if you are called James, you will be given a folder named “Artist James”). The dropbox has one folder per pet sculpture, with subfolders for Similar Pets, Photos, Preview, Printfile and Sculpture.
2.New model – When we give you a model, we create a new folder in dropbox. For example, you have a new Golden Retriever called “Max”, and our internal numbering for this dog is 1709012, so we create a new folder called “1709012-Max-Golden Retriever”. We put the pictures of the pet in the photos dropbox subfolder.
3. Similar models - We will also put a pet in the “similar pets” folder, with the PLY file of the closest model or models that we have, to speed up your work. For example, for the model of Max mentioned above, we might find a golden retriever dog that looks very similar.
4. Model version 1 – Taking the similar pet PLY file as the starting point, you model the new sculpture using the photos. You put the model as a PLY file in the Preview directory. The PLY file should be named after the name of the designated pet folder and the number of version it is (e.g. “1709012-Max-Golden Retriever-v1”). Then email info@artylobster.com to let us know that the preview is ready.
5. Internal review – We review it and give you any comments on things to change. When you have done these changes, you save the updated model as a PLY format in the Preview directory and let us know. For every version increase the version number by one. If we are happy, we get the customer to review it. If not, we let you know what needs to be changed.
6. External review – When we are happy, we share the model with the customer. The customer gives us amends, and we let you know. You make the requested amends. You save the file again, until we get the customer’s final approval. When the customer is happy we rename the latest file adding “final” and we let you know.
7. Payment – We pay you 50$ (USD) per model. We can pay using PayPal, Western Union or other project payment systems.
The model at all versions should be around 2m polygons with polypaint and saved in a PLY format. All models should be saved in the PLY format and all subtools should be merged down prior to export.
