Description
Experience Level: Expert
Estimated project duration: 3 - 4 weeks
Web based research project. To research 15 regions of the US and Canada for a US based Venture Capital Firm considering each region for investment based on the vibrancy of it's business startup scene.
Output is Excel s/sheet with 15 pages (one for each region) and report recommending the Top 5 most promising areas for investment including rationale for the decisions and recommendations for decision making process for considering future regions.
Research criteria already established and 3 of the 15 areas have been researched already, so template can be followed.
Criteria to include are number of business incubators/accelerators in the region, number of Venture Capital firms, Academic institutions, rating according to research such as Startup Genome, any notable large companies in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the area (eg is there a Google around?), articles in business magazines on the region and it's startup scene, travel time from Boston and notes on anything else eg if there is a favourable tax regime in that region.
This was a part of an academic/business project that I cannot complete now due to family circumstances. It was taking me roughly an hour to get the basic research done for each region and into the spreadsheet. I have budgeted an hour each for the remaining 12 regions, an hour to tidy up the 3 I've done, 5 hours to write up the final report with recommendations and 2 hours for communication with me regarding the project giving a total of 20 hours.
The research for the spreadsheet does not require expert knowledge of finance or business although someone with a business background might find it easier eg MBA student to whom it may also be of personal use. Deciding on a criteria for the Top 5 recommendations and reporting on that may require some more expertise although I would be able to give plenty of input to this via phone and email for a non expert in the subject area. This requires having a 'feel' for each region which tends to come when you do the initial research on it so it should be fairly obvious to the researcher which regions are going to be best once the criteria and background to the project are explained by me at the start.
I would expect an initial detailed chat about the work where I can provide significant background information and guidance on the project followed by regular updates. The project has to be completed and signed off by 6th of Jan.
I've uploaded a draft Project Plan. a background research document to give context and the spreadsheet so far.
