About the Big Give

The Big Give’s vision is a world in which everyone is connected to causes and inspired to give to them. The Big Give’s mission is to provide a platform to promote causes and inspire people to give. We achieve our mission through:
Online match funding campaigns - we are responsible for UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, the Christmas Challenge. We also run bespoke match funding campaigns for philanthropists/funders and emergency match funding in the aftermath of humanitarian crises.
Showcasing charities and their projects - the Big Give has c.10,000 charities registered on it’s site and over 8,800 projects listed on its site. Users can browse charities and projects and make donations anytime of the year to these charities.
Providing services which help connect charities, their supporters and philanthropists - the Big Give also runs a number of other services including sector research, a free trustee finder service, a Philanthropy in Schools programme and a free advice column.
Since being founded by Sir Alec Reed in 2007, the Big Give has helped to raise £97 million for UK-registered charities. Our long term goal is to help raise £1bn for the charitable sector, primarily through online match funding campaigns. The Big Give is generously supported by which helps us provide a cost-effective service for both charities aiming to raise funds, philanthropists wishing to leverage their giving and individuals wishing to donate money online.

About our finance function

FY runs from July - June.
Management accounts are produced on a periodic (4 weeks) basis.
The Big Give Trust took control of the the Big Give Ltd (now a dormant company) at the beginning of the FY 16/17. All transactions now take place under the Big Give Trust however there were some inter-company transfers up until November 2016.
All transactions are processed through the Big Give Trust.
There are relatively few transactions that take place (20-30 expenses) in an average period. The number of transactions increases during match funding campaigns (2-3 per year) when we payout match funding to charities.
There are a few number of large donors that provide match funding to the Big Give to distribute to charities. We also receive a small number of large donations from as unrestricted donations to fund the Big Give Trust.

Our needs

Production of periodic (13 per year - every 4 weeks) management accounts, including:
Posting income/expenditure on QuickBooks
Producing P&L and balance sheets via pre-defined template reports
Bank reconciliation
Answering any financial related questions from Director, Operations Manager, and/or Auditors
Supporting the production of end of year accounts.
Making recommendations, where appropriate, for improvements that could be made to the finance function
Our expectations
Accountant with experience of using QuickBooks
Experience of producing management accounts for charities
Willing to occasionally be located in the Big Give office in Holborn, London. When remotely based, to facilitate the secure transaction of financial documentation.
Our previous accountant was billing circa 10-20 hours (depending on activity) per month.
