If you were self-employed at any point from 6th April 2018 to 5th April 2019 and you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2016\/mar\/21\/sharing-economy-1000-tax-free-allowances-ebay-airbnb-micro-entrepreneurs\">earned more than \u00a31000<\/a>, then you need to file a self-assessment tax return and pay any tax you owe before January 31st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t submit your self-assessment by January 31st then you face receiving a penalty charge of \u00a3100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understandably, filing your tax return can be a stressful time. So, together with a handful of PeoplePerHour community experts, we\u2019ve put together five top tips for filing your 2020 self-assessment tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/self_assessment_tip3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25416\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Hire an accountant to help you with your 2020 self-assessment tax return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, so it may seem like an obvious solution but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/hire-freelancers\/business-support\/business-finances\">hiring a qualified accountant<\/a>&nbsp;really is the best option when it comes to filing your 2020 self-assessment tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountants will know about all of the deductions you can make. And often, these are things that freelancers and small business owners forget about. Things like the use of your home office space, depreciation of essential equipment that your business might use, or even how to claim a portion of your utility bills if you work from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving the right help and support is key to filing your self-assessment tax return on time and paying absolutely no more taxes than are necessary,\u201d says chartered accountant, Gary Green, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/freelancer\/gary\/chartered-accountant\/53327\">Key Business Consultants<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountants can also help you to keep your financial affairs in order throughout the year and make smart business decisions that will have a positive impact on your tax. They\u2019ll also be able to help you if you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/understand-self-assessment-bill\/payments-on-account\">need to pay tax on account<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/self_assessment_tip1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25417\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Ensure that you\u2019re already registered with HMRC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First thing\u2019s first, if you don\u2019t want to encounter problems with your self-assessment tax return, make sure you have registered with HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first start out on your exciting new venture, there are a whole host of things to do. Getting an amazing website up and running, printing your business cards, organising your work space\u2026 The list goes on. But, if you\u2019ve forgotten to register as self-employed with HMRC, when it comes to the end of the tax year, you might get caught out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEnsure that you have registered for an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services\">HMRC online services account<\/a>&nbsp;and activated the Self Assessment Service,\u201d says certified Accountant and qualified bookkeeper,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/freelancer\/anita\/certified-practising-accountant\/6912\">Anita Benge<\/a>. \u201cIf you haven\u2019t, you will have to wait for the activation code and it can take some time to receive it. If you\u2019ve left it to the last minute, though, a registered HMRC agent can file on your behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/self_assessment_tip2a.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25419\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Don\u2019t ignore the 2020 self-assessment tax return deadlines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s crucial that you hit the deadline for filing your self-assessment tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still working on a paper return, then it\u2019s already too late. The deadline for filing a paper return is October 31st following the end of the tax year. However, for online tax returns, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/self-assessment-tax-returns\/deadlines\">deadline is January 31st<\/a>. This is also the date that you should pay the tax that you owe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t ignore the deadlines or assume it\u2019s okay to be a few days late,\u201d advises Laura Bolton, director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/freelancer\/laura\/accountant-book-keeper-simple-a\/61258\">Simple Accounting (NW) Ltd<\/a>. \u201cIf you reach February and still haven\u2019t filed your return, you\u2019ll be walloped with a \u00a3100 fine. That\u2019s just for starters, of course. Seriously \u2013 don\u2019t leave it too late!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do miss the deadline for whatever reason, then call the HMRC helpline and get some advice on what to do next. You might catch them in a forgiving mood!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Include everything in your 2020 self-assessment tax return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peopleperhour.com\/discover\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/the-new-york-public-library-kAJLRQwt5yY-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28727\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common mistakes to make is assuming that HMRC doesn\u2019t care about your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.listsmart.io\/article\/ebay-tax-guide-uk\">eBay sales sideline&nbsp;<\/a>or the handmade teddies that you sell on Etsy. In 2018, eBay released it\u2019s UK retail report, revealing more than 1065 traders with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tamebay.com\/2018\/09\/ebay-uk-retail-report-2018-reveals-1065-ebay-millionaires.html\">turnover of more than one million<\/a>&nbsp;pounds, in the UK alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your income in any one tax year exceeds \u00a31000, then you need to file a tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
