Flying Start XP crushes tight deadlines with the help of freelance workers

Flying Start XP uses experiential methods to help businesses develop core skills and behaviours to build self-aware and proactive employees. In this case study, we see how this ambitious company uses freelance workers from PeoplePerHour to boost its growth.

How freelance workers helped Flying Start XP to crush tight deadlines

Alex Webb and her partner established Flying Start XP in 2016. By then, they already had more than 15 years of experience in business behavioural change. However, despite being experts in their own field, they found themselves in new waters as small business owners. An endless to-do list and a mind-bending variety of tasks stretched their skills and time to the limits.

“As a startup, we can’t do everything ourselves,” Alex explains. “I built my skills on WordPress and online finance tools. I was also designing and writing workshops, building a network of associates, marketing and taking sales calls. It was just full on, and I knew my limits. This is where PeoplePerHour has helped.”

Discovering PeoplePerHour was a game-changer. The new founders quickly realised that leveraging freelance workers could give their business a real competitive advantage.

Freelance workers available, any time, at any price

For small business owners, outsourcing presents two major issues. The first, and probably the toughest, is learning to delegate and entrusting important projects to people outside of the business. This means taking a step back and letting a freelance worker drive a project. The second is cost. Outsourcing to agencies or boutique consultancies can quickly rack up bills, putting a financial strain on the business.

Alex explains that working with freelance specialists via PeoplePerHour eliminates both of these risks.

“A huge difference for me has been value for money and quick turnarounds. I’ve often needed something overnight and have been blown away by how quickly people react. We can’t afford to employ someone full time so we do most of the heavy lifting ourselves. But why spend ages trying to design or edit when there’s someone out there who can do it in a fraction of the time?”

Running side gigs or often a full-time business on the platform, freelancers are typically just as entrepreneurial as the people buying their services. They understand that being successful means delivering high-quality work and meeting client expectations.

“I was pulling together a presentation for a client one evening and I always use a lot of imagery in my slides. We needed something different to show the big picture and felt that icons could tell a better story. Turning to PeoplePerHour’s freelance workers, within five minutes of posting my project brief, I had a few examples of work. I also had some fantastic people who wanted to do the job,” Alex remembers.

“After selecting someone to work with, it happened very quickly. Within two hours I had lots of icons in brand colours that I could use in whichever way I wanted. I now use them for presentations, my website and also documents. There’s nothing flashy about them, but it’s something I couldn’t do myself in the timescale I had.”

Building a network of “go-to” freelancer workers

What started as a one-off project, has now become Alex’s ‘go-to’ solution for various tasks.

“I’m impressed with the level of professionalism of freelancers on PeoplePerHour. We’re using the platform more and more and for different projects. And I’ve built up a few ‘go-to’ freelancers for certain tasks. I love the flexibility, the variety, the fact that someone is always available to solve the problem for you.”

While she’s had a few bumps along the way, Alex has developed her own freelancer vetting process to choose the best person for the project.

“I’ve been burnt a few times and selected my freelancer a bit hastily. Now I really look at their references, the time zone they’re in and the type of work they have produced. This has definitely created better results. I learned that if you’re going to create a brief, you have to be online to answer questions. You need to make recommendations and give feedback otherwise someone spends a lot of time creating something that you don’t want.”

Using PeoplePerHour has been a journey for Flying Start XP founders and they are not planning to change their ways now. Besides the immediacy factor and cost-effectiveness of on-demand labour, Alex points out another interesting perk of working with freelancers.

“I also like to know that as someone starting up a new business, I’m helping another person gain more experience, earn more money, and make a better life for themselves. In life, you have to be proactive and set your path. PeoplePerHour has helped me achieve more, and I can help freelancers to achieve more, too.”
