Ultimate Facebook Content And Posting Guide

Getting started

Before designing your perfect content plan you really need to understand who you are talking to. It really helps to have the perfect customer avatar in your mind while creating content.

I wrote an in-depth article for creating your customer avatar so you can get started there. This makes sure you are targeting your content at the right person so your audience is more likely to interact with and like your content.

Now you’ve got a very good understanding of who your ideal customers are you can start creating your content plan.

Your Content Structure

This part of the process is best conducted in collaboration with a coworker or preferably your whole team. It’s more fun and you’ll come up with far more good ideas you can use.

Your content structure needs to have different elements, unique content you create and shared content from popular blogs.

Consistent unique content

  • Daily image posts
  • Live Q & A’s
  • Tips
  • Unique Infographics
  • Questions
  • You videos

Shared content

  • Industry blog articles
  • Popular videos from other pages
  • Quotes and memes
  • Popular Infographics
  • Puzzles

It’s time to decide which ones you are going to create. This will be regular content your fans will start to expect and enjoy.

That means it’s important to stay consistent. If content is king consistency is queen!

To make it easy to visualise you can arrange your post types on a weekly schedule worksheet.

For best results, you want about 5 posts per a day for maximum reach without annoying your fans and losing followers.

A couple of examples are “Super Tip Tuesday” and “Quote of The Day”

Quotes are an easy win. They are very popular and very easy to create and post. So that can make up 1 post per day out of 5.

So your schedule worksheet might look something like:


  • Quote of the day
  • Popular Puzzle
  • Shared viral video
  • Shared blog article
  • Your own blog article


  • Quote of the day
  • Super Tip Tuesday
  • Shared viral video
  • Shared blog article
  • Your own blog article


  • Quote of the day
  • Live video Q&A
  • Shared viral video
  • Shared blog article
  • Your own blog article


And you finish that for the whole week. Now you have a solid basis to start creating your content and delegate tasks if you’re part of a team.

Content Planning – Asset List

List out everything you’re currently doing that you can post. Sometimes you already have some great assets to share. Do you have a blog that’s regularly updated? Do you currently post to Instagram daily?

All these things can make up part of your Facebook posting plan.

Next list out and save all the best blogs and Facebook pages in your industry. Create a spreadsheet for them with some basic information:

  • Website/brand name
  • URL
  • RSS feed URL
  • Facebook page

Most blogs these days have an RSS feed and if you want to automate the process you will need one for each of the blogs. You don’t need RSS feeds for Facebook pages, just blogs so leave this blank.

Now you have a good database.

5 Content Creation Tricks

Trick #1

Use Buzzsumo to search for popular shared articles in your niche and add those websites to Asset List. You should start to get a feel for which sites are good with regular shareable content and which aren’t.

If you have time and you’re managing this yourself you can check in at Buzzsumo on a daily basis and share the top posts every day.

If you have a content strategy this is a great tool for that as well.

Trick #2

Use Facebook’s Top Posts from Pages You Watch

  1. Click on the Insights tab on at the top of the page
  2. Click on the Posts tab on the left of the page
  3. Click on the Top Posts from Pages You Watch tab
  4. The first time you do this you have to add at least 5 pages before it shows any results. So you need to find 5 good pages in your industry you want to watch.

A good tip to find the 5 good pages to watch is a simple google search with the following: [your keyword] Facebook pages

So for example in the skin care niche I used:

  • Skincare Facebook pages
  • Anti-aging Facebook pages

The advantage of using Google is their results will bring up some top pages that have a lot of engagement and likes.

Trick #3

Post Planner

I sometimes use Post Planner to schedule a post to Facebook. You do have to pay for this service but it’s well worth it and I highly recommend it.

It has this great feature where you can search for top trending Facebook content and either repost it or sometimes if it’s a good quote I’ll simply redesign it and post it myself.

As long as you’re not infringing copyright there’s no problem at all doing that. With popular quotes, you’re not because you even know the person posting it didn’t think of the actual quote itself, so as long as you include the original name of the person who said it that’s no problem.

Trick #4


You want to use canva to create your quote posts because it makes it really easy. If you’re using post planner you can also use Canva directly from the Post Planner app to schedule posts—this is very convenient.

Trick #5

Re-post articles from popular blogs. Use the blog you’ve found and added to your Asset List.  This is a great technique and again something that Post Planner accommodates.

First, you just need to find the RSS feeds of the blog sites you want to use. Add “feed” to the URL and see if that works. So, for example, let’s use post planner: https://www.postplanner.com/feed

On most sites that will redirect to the RSS feed, which in this case is: https://www.postplanner.com/blog/rss.xml

It should look something like:

Or it may look a little different. This is HTML code and this is what an RSS feed looks like.

If that doesn’t work try adding “RSS” to the end of the URL in the same way and see if that works. Failing that try searching google for it and try something like:

“Post Planner RSS feed”

Still nothing? Maybe it doesn’t have an RSS feed and you can’t use it. You can still manually post their articles simply by copying and pasting the article links into Facebook.

Bonus: 5 of the most engaging post types on Facebook

Infographics — These are highly shareable, one of the most shared post types

Videos — Think about short videos preferably with subtitles (a lot of people watch the videos at work so subtitles get more views). Things like behind the scenes, funny videos, thank you videos and testimonials. You can also share other videos you come across that you like.

Questions — asking thoughtful questions are the great way to elicit comments to your posts so these are an important part of the mix to keep your engagement up.

Quotes & Memes — still one of the most popular post types. Mainly because they are so easy to create and very popular at the same time. They are being slightly overused at the moment so you need to pick some good ones relevant to your industry.

Puzzles — These are amazing! Easily my personal favourite. I always stop to do a puzzle if I see them on Facebook. I normally post a comment after I solve it as well. I’m not the only one. For a certain type of person, these are a winner so it’s good to feed some of them into the mix to appeal to more personality types.
