Freelancer Story: “I know that with PPH there is always the opportunity to earn more money to support my dreams”

Rebecca is a CERT 5 freelance writer, blogger and publicity coach, who can help you tap into the digital world and find out what the Internet can do for your business!

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get into freelancing?

My name is Rebecca Miller, I worked in marketing and PR for national and international non-profit organisations. Due to widespread cuts in the sector, my whole team was put at risk of redundancy and my job location changed. I decided not to apply for the new job, and at the same time one of my colleagues suggested I check out PeoplePerHour. I put my profile up that very day, posted my first Hourlie, and had my first paying client within a week of joining the platform!

What was your previous job before deciding to go freelance?

I was a PR and Marketing manager.

How did you come across PPH?

A colleague suggested I take a look at the site, as she had hired freelancers from PeoplePerHour in the past. I knew that there were jobs out there that people could do from anywhere in the world, but I just didn’t know how to get started. PeoplePerHour took the pressure away from me and made it so easy to reach out and find new clients from day one.

What was your first job like on PPH?

I can remember it to this day! I was so excited when I got the first notification of a sale that my hands were shaking. Suddenly all my dreams of living the freelance lifestyle and building a business on my own terms were actually becoming a reality.

What is a typical day like for you?

No day is typical, and that’s the way I like it! I love the variety that freelancing brings, and I get to work on so many varied projects. I could be handling the publicity for a big product launch, supporting a charity in the run-up to an event, or writing blogs and articles for other small business owners to use to promote their companies. I normally start work late morning, and work into the evening, as this is when I am usually at my most creative. That is the joy of being freelance – I get to create my own schedule and work to the hours that suit me.

How does freelancing compare to a 9-5?

It really is incomparable! In 2014 I was lucky enough to spend 3 months in the Caribbean, thanks to my freelance career I could continue to earn money whilst experiencing the world. But don’t get me wrong, more often than not you’ll find me in my home office, wearing yoga-pants and sipping on a cuppa!

What benefits have you found by using PPH?

PPH makes it really easy to find clients and they provide security for both the freelancer and the client. The interface is really easy to use, and the payment system really helps when it comes to my end of year accounts.

What does your future hold? Where would you like to take this?

I have lots of ideas for new Hourlies, and I am also building a course called The Publicity Program, teaching small business owners PR. I know that with PPH there is always the opportunity to earn more money to support my dreams, and I plan to go travelling again sometime soon – taking my business with me!

What are your top 5 tips for freelancers who are new to PPH?

1. Be really detailed in your profile and use compelling language so that people know immediately why they should hire you

2. Make your profile attractive with a well-designed banner. You could find a freelancer on PPH to help you design it if need be! Include examples of your work in your portfolio so that potential clients can see just what you have to offer.

3. Keep communication lines open with your clients and be ready and available to answer their questions when you’re working on a job. This really helps to build trust and bring back repeat clients.

4. When bidding for a job, always provide as much detail as possible and make sure you read the advert and answer all of their questions as fully as you can. This is really important if you want to be awarded the best jobs.

5. Think of a couple of ‘Hourlies’ that you can offer – choose things that are popular and that you have the expertise to provide, and be really detailed in your description so that clients know exactly what to expect from working with you.

What are your top 5 tips for PR?

My top 5 publicity tips are:

1. Utilise your blog on your website to showcase your product or service.

2. Social media is a really powerful tool for getting your business known and seen by even more ‘dream clients’. Choose two platforms to start with and build a following on them before you move onto the others, this helps to combat overwhelm.

3. Look for guest blogging opportunities which will enable you to showcase your talent/brand to even more potential clients

4. PR is a great way to boost your business – whether it be in blogs, magazines, local papers or radio, it’s worth bringing in a professional to help you secure the best opportunities.

5. Video is a really powerful tool to use in all your marketing. People will feel really connected with you if you include a video on your site.

What web browser do you use?

Google Chrome

If you were an animal, which one would you be and why?

I’d be an eagle, soaring free above the clouds, getting to travel the world, would generally be awesome!
