Introducing Seller Availability

Hello everyone,

PPH would like to announce an important new tool for both Sellers and Buyers called “Seller Availability”!

Sellers are now able to specify if they are available to chat about a new project and start working on it immediately. This allows Sellers manage their work and time more effectively by controlling when they can start working on a new project, how much work they take on and manage delivery date expectations. Buyers can easily filter and contact Sellers that are around and available to chat and start their quick and urgent projects instantly if you both agree on the terms (seller can send a proposal and buyer accept through the workstream).

Based on feedback we got from many of you the functionality of this feature is the following:

1) For Sellers:

  • You can set your availability status using a switch which is accessible from the main menu when logged in. You can go on and set your status to either “Available” or “Busy” but beware that if your status is “Available” that means you should promptly respond to the Buyer’s message and be able to start work immediately after you agree on terms with the Buyer.
  • Your availability is also adjusted automatically in real time based on your working days as specified in Settings > Availability when logged in. During the days you are off your status is automatically set to ‘Busy’ and during your working days it is automatically updated to the last status you had specifically set. For example if on Friday you have set your status to “Available” and you have indicated that you do not work on Saturday and Sunday, then during the weekend your status will be automatically set to “Busy” and on Monday it will be set back to “Available”.
  • Similar real time update is also applied based on your off days as specified in Settings > Availability when logged in.
  • Your availability status is automatically updated according to your online activity. If you have not logged in for the last 24 hours then the status is automatically set to “Busy”. When you are back online and logged in, the status is automatically set to the last status you had specifically set.

2) For Buyers:

Most of the action happens in Freelancers listings accessible from the top menu “BUY” > “FIND FREELANCERS”:

  • The Sellers that are available to start work immediately have a special tick icon next to their profile photo.
  • You can filter to find available Sellers using the option of the left sidebar:
  • In case a Seller is “Available”, the special tick indication is shown next to the Seller’s profile photo in other places as well (Profiles, WorkStream etc)

We hope this feature improves communication between Sellers and Buyers. We would very much like to read your feedback and suggestions about how to make this feature even better as always in the comment box below.

Best regards,
Christos

An interesting and potentially useful update but I fear that once again, it’s not been quite thought through – I’m concerned about how you note that when the status is set to “available”, the seller “should be able to start work immediately after a buyer contacts you.” I don’t want to discourage potential buyers from contacting me just because I’m working on another project and it seems that by setting availability as “busy”, I would do just that. The word “immediately” is the problem. I might be busy in the morning but have free time in the afternoon. It’s not… Read more »

Dear PPH team, Its a great updation on profile. Surely it will help sellers to get more work…

the feature will help a lot, knowing that PPH has serious problems with messages delivery which are almost late all the time. Another thing that could be great is for a pop up window for an immediate chat.

Hi Whilst this may suit some, for me it doesn’t really match the real world. The lead time between making a proposal and getting work is not always instantaneous, so I have to look for the next project whilst busy on the current one, and I don’t have the luxuary of putting my feet up whilst I wait for the next suitable one to come along. If I mark myself as busy I may put someone off. If I mark myself as idle sorry available when I’m carrying out other work at best I am likely to raise expectations that… Read more »

What Ben said. Especially this part:
‘ No buyer should ever be led to believe that by contacting a seller, they will immediately get the service they want from that seller as projects must always be discussed and negotiated first.’

Even if you just remove ‘immediately’ for the time being, it will be less confusing.

Sam
Sam

Well the upshot of this for me seems to be I must always set myself to busy unless I am actually sat at the computer waiting for work. Not really helpful in managing my workload at all. I can see how this is any improvement in the online/offline system.

Ana
Ana

I see you changed ‘immediately’ to ‘as soon as you contact him/her’, which still implies immediate service. Maybe just ‘This seller is available for hire’ or something like that, so they don’t expect instant response (even though there is a Response Time in our seller stats, but in my experience it gets overlooked quite often).

RE the Main Menu:
I suppose most people are more likely to use the main menu to navigate between the dashboard and profile more often than to change their availability during the day, so moving the availability switch a bit lower would make it more user friendly.

Sam
Sam

Sorry that should say I cannot see how this is any improvement on the online/offline system.

I don’t find this helpful in any way.

Me-Thinks some very sound comments to improve the PPH initiative. are seen above this comment.
The early 1st talk with People is so important. Thus any text that cause a 1st step confusion between people. is not kosher.i

We completely agree with Ben,
We like any of PPH team member will reply to this.
If you are improving on something, it is better to provide complete solution in place of just adding a single functionality.

awaiting PPH team reply.

There are lots of deficiencies and major problems on this website to be worked on than “availability setting” which is of no use at all. No one sets his/her availability to busy even if s/he is really busy! What a fantasy!

Hi there, Please explain and define what “immediately” means. This question relates to this part of your post: ““Available” that means you should promptly respond to the Buyer’s message and be able to start work immediately after you agree on terms with the Buyer.” And also to this part from the help desk article: ” Beware that if your status is “Available” you should be able to start work immediately after a Buyer contacts you. ” I am concerned that buyers might understand that “immediately” means that I will respond to their message in under 1 hour or in a… Read more »

Congratulations! Looks good to me. Just one doubt, will I stop receiving the requirements and job/s posted emails if the status is ‘busy’?

thank you all for your comments. Some clarifications: – The availability status is different than online / offline because it gives you the flexibility to change it and set to Busy if you are too stretched and do not want to be disturbed at some point during the day / week/ month. – The status “available now” shows that you are available to chat and start work only if you agree on the terms with the Buyer. – This does not have to do anything with Jobs. Buyers invite you to bid and the system sends you job notifications regardless… Read more »

Thank you for the clarifications Christos. I think it’s important to add the functionality to enable/disable Hourlies en-mass as a matter of urgency. It makes no sense for a seller to set the status as ‘busy’ but to still permit the sale of an Hourlie. It’s now an additional administrative chore to set both this new toggle to ‘busy’ and to then disable each Hourlie when busy or otherwise unavailable. To your first point of clarification, I don’t think the feature as it stands works in the way that you’re communicating (or at least as far as I’m interpreting it).… Read more »

I have had a slightly different situation relating to availability. I was in a position to take on projects immediately so placed some bids. Nothing ever came of them and I moved on and started new projects and made some more bids which were accepted. Fast forward about 5 months, with lots of projects completed since the original batch of bids, and suddenly one of them was accepted without warning or prior contact from the client. Unfortunately I was at the time in the middle of two other projects so had to work double-hard to do a good, timely job… Read more »

My thoughts are similar to other posts here.

Setting the availability to busy after the first project that might only take a few hours to complete, could lose work – this is a luxury freelancers do no have.

We have to be available at all times.

KateW
KateW

I agree with everything that Ben has said. I am not convinced that this is a beneficial step for anyone. The word “immediately” is not helpful. Stuart also makes a valid point: when you place a bid you have no idea when the client will award the job (if at all, in my experience). I too have been awarded a job quite some time after bidding, when I’ve been working on other jobs, making it difficult to juggle everything. I have been a client on PPH, as well as a freelancer. I fail to see why being able to contact… Read more »

Hi PPH,

Not a bad effort. But it could be a whole lot better with a little more thought before implementation.

What I would like to see is a calendar/planner. Then you don’t see the ugly locking style you have just implemented which says, go away… Im busy.

All we need is a planner where we can update with booked project dates. And the client can check our dates to see if our time frames are complimentary.

Thanks
Roger

I agree with Ben: there are degrees of availability. Also immediate availability is irrelevant for most of my work because most of my buyers need to discuss their requirements, send me clarifications, consider options at different prices etc.

Kate W
Kate W

You start your explanation with:
“It’s important for Buyers to have an accurate indication of when Sellers can carry out work.”

Isn’t it equally important for Sellers to have an indication of when Buyers might allocate their work?

So many jobs are posted with no indication as to when the job might be allocated, and many never are. I know that the reason may be that the job is posted on more than one freelance website – but simple courtesy should lead Buyers to then cancel the job if it is awarded elsewhere. Perhaps PPH could stress that when ads are being placed?

Glad to see this is finally being addressed but I agree with Ben’s comment about having a range of options in terms of availability. I have found the existing system unmanageable in terms of setting hourlies as available or not. I have too many to adjust the status of each. I would add one more category however. Ben’s drop down menu suggestion would be perfect ie 1. ‘Unavailable’ – seller is away and not contactable. 2.‘Busy but bookings available’ – seller can’t start on new projects immediately but can arrange for a later date. 3. ‘Limited availability’ – seller is… Read more »

How can I know if I am available or not when buyers who posted jobs 14 days ago that I applied for have not had the courtesy to say anything. If they come back now and I say sorry cannot fit that large scale job in now, as although I am showing as available because I am able to do small jobs would this not cause a problem. Whilst you say that this improvement means sellers will respond quicker to you and be available, can you not have the same courtesy the other way that after a proposal is submitted… Read more »

Feature request:

I would like something in between Busy and Available. Something like Tentative, or Open to Enquiries. Something like that.

I am a full time contractor and I like to pick and chose my freelance work. On the whole I would prefer to appear ‘Busy’ but I would still like the opportunity to discuss larger projects with clients whilst deterring someone looking for very small quick jobs, or appearing to be available for ‘anything’.

Paul
Paul

I think you guys would be better off finding bugs within the messages system. I had peopleperhour open all last night, waiting to see if any sales happened before I went to bed.

No sales… So I went to bed then got up to find that someone bought an hourly at 8pm last night. The message didn’t come through. So instead of a quick reply from me to the seller, I find it 12 hours later.

C
C

I agree on the points made that being ‘busy’ working, doesn’t mean you’re not available to liase and discuss new projects. You can schedule them in (to be started soon) as oppose to working on new projects immediately after agreeing terms (which can also be possible but might require I have an open schedule, and a seller who is any good and established, would have some business booked into their schedule).

This is the stupidest goddamn thing I have ever seen. Makes me want to abandon PPH after years of happy selling.

Graeme

I have decided to pause my only active hourlie. I usually only do large projects that pay reasonable rates and which tend to require a lot of discussion before starting, so the hourlie was the only thing for which availability mattered.

I would still like an “open to enquiries” or “busy in the short term” button.

Ben
Ben

Well something’s not quite right with this implementation, notwithstanding the problems already highlighted. I was active on PPH yesterday but this morning (less than 24 hours later) my status was automatically set to busy. I’ve checked my availability settings which are all fine so I can see no good reason for it. Frankly, I’m finding the 24 hour limit very restrictive and irritating. I might not have a need to log in to the site every single day but in no way should that put off others from contacting me. If we must have this automated and restrictive setting, could… Read more »
