Homepage Design Tips To Make Visitors Click!

For any business, having a website is pretty much essential in order to find customers and generate sales. But just having a website isn’t enough. You need to have a website that is designed to catch the attention of your visitors and convert them into not just leads but into sales. If you don’t have an attractive and engaging homepage, people will not stay long to see what you have to offer them. So in order to help you have a well-designed homepage that will get visitors clicking on your site, here are a few design tips.

1. Layout

First of all, your homepage needs to have a good layout that is attractive to visitors. This means it needs to be clean and clutter-free. Excessive information and images can be overwhelming to visitors. Have a layout that is well organised, clean and easy to navigate, and keep all your important content and images above the fold so that your visitors’ eyes will easily see them. Avoid cluttering with too many images, clip art, banners, excessive text, etc.

2. Images

Yes, images are nice and eye-catching and an easy way to tell visitors about you and your company, but too many is too much of a good thing. Just use a few solid, high-resolution photos. Also, don’t put text over image backgrounds. It gives an amateur, low-quality feel to the site, and many sites that do use this are user-hostile in other ways as well. Beware, too, that if you use image backgrounds, they are slow to load. However, if you know what you’re doing, they’re OK to use.

3. Annoying elements

Avoid annoying elements like blinking text, scrolling text, animated GIFs, and auto-loading sound.  They’re distracting, making it difficult for visitors to focus on reading your important content, and if your visitors find them annoying, they’re more likely to leave without clicking on anything and are less likely to bookmark the site and come back. These elements can also slow the loading speed of the page for people with slow connections. Scrolling text also prevents visitors from reading at their own pace. So keep your visitors’ best interests in mind and try to please them, not you, with your design.

4. Minimise clicking

This is very important to remember: have as few clicks as possible between your visitors and your information! The more they have to click around your site to find stuff, the more likely they are to leave your site, or at the very least not view much of your content. Also, don’t use a splash page as your homepage; your visitors should come directly to your site. Minimise scrolling, as well. Also, if you have more than one page on your site, make sure each page directs back to your homepage.

5. Content

The content and information you share should be easy to read to make it easy for your visitors to understand. Use headlines and sub-headlines, use bullet points, and cut the fluff. Use easy-to-read fonts, such as Sans Serif fonts like Arial and Verdana, and a font of about 16. Don’t keep switching fonts, either. Keep it streamlined as much as possible – in general, no more than 3 styles and sizes.

6. Colour

Contrasting colours for text and background can make it easy to read. Complementary colours are good for giving a sense of balance and harmony. Use vibrant colours sparingly as they give a feeling of emotion, so use them for drawing attention to buttons and calls to action. White/negative space is good for giving a modern and uncluttered look.

7. Mobile

With more and more people using their mobile phones for internet searching, consider making sure your homepage has a layout design that is mobile-friendly.
