Freelancer Story: “Develop your own Style”

Meet Jane, a TOP Cert freelancer who loves what she does, earns good money and has tons of freedom!

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get into freelancing?

I had always wanted to work as a freelancer but my salary was the main household income at the time and I couldn’t see how to make the jump. I began working freelance for just a few hours a week via the PPH site and loved it; I would get home from work and work in the evenings. A while after I started freelancing I was made redundant by my full-time employer. I got a small pay out and after applying for a few jobs and not getting them (maybe due to my age which was 50+ at that time) I decided to use the redundancy money to give PPH a real go. I started bidding for jobs and my new career began. Within a year I was making the same amount of money as my salary.

What was your previous job before deciding to go freelance?

I worked full time in the Sales & Marketing department of a publishing company.

How did you come across PPH?

I was deliberately looking for freelance work and having looked at a few sites online, PPH was the only one that I liked and which I thought was easy to use.

What was your first job like on PPH?

I loved it! When I won my first job I got such a buzz, I enjoyed the freedom of working solo very much and got great feedback from my first client.

What is a typical day like for you?

I am not an early riser! I get up at about 9am, take my ‘work-buddy’ out for a walk who is Charlie my 7 year old Fox Red Labrador. When we get back, I grab a coffee, check my emails etc. then check my work list to see what my first job is for the day. My daughter gets home at 3pm so I try to have the bulk of my work done by then so we can spend time together. However, I do work late some days along with the holidays and weekends.

How does freelancing compare to a 9-5?

There is no comparison. The work/life balance is spot on, home life takes priority, I love what I do, earn good money and have tons of freedom.

What benefits have you found by using PPH?

I can’t fault the site. Invoicing and getting paid is simple, although I do get the odd client or two who decides to try and buck the system! Customer service is good, I am able to access my invoices and payments out to put my accounts together and the quality of work from clients is good. I have met some amazing people via PPH. I also love that the projects come in from all over the world, not just UK.

What does your future hold? Where would you like to take this?

I am happy as I am. I hope to ‘retire’ when I hit 65 or at least slow down. Most likely I will reduce my hours but still keep active on the PPH site.

What are your top 5 tips for freelancers who are new to PPH?

1. Take the time to build a good Profile.
2. Fill your Portfolio with previous work, even if it was done outside of your freelance role.
3. You may have to work on a lower rate until you have established yourself but then you can increase it.
4. Don’t apply for just any job – be selective, take time with your bids and give plenty of detail along with your prices.
5. Always be professional – even when things go wrong, which is not often, follow the PPH processes and you should not have any difficulties.

What are your top 5 copywriting tips?

1.    Study the client brief and make sure you understand it fully.
2.    Carry out detailed research.
3.    Develop your own style.
4.    Adhere to deadlines.
5.    Develop good relationships with your clients.

What web browser do you use?

If you were an animal, which one would you be and why?

Definitely a dog – if everyone in the world were dogs, it would be such a friendly, loving and hospitable place!

A great post, Jane, and sound advice. I think it’s really important to review what other skills and experience you have, so that you can distinguish yourself as a freelancer on PPH and also offer additional services to clients. Great dog too, by the way!

Way to go Jane, living the freelancer dream. The “Contact Jane” button is not working because the hyperlink starts with “hhttps” (starts with double h). Got to appreciate my QC skills eh? 🙂

Thanks for pointing that out! I have just edited that now and it is working. Thanks so much!

Hi Jane, great to read your story. I’m just on the beginning of what I hope will be an adventurous and enjoyable story. I am really looking for part time work to enhance my meagre teaching assistant salary and hope that by using my previous admin skills and my skills as a TA and a mum, that I can make PPH work for me. Thanks for the motivation to keep trying.
