CERT now reflects increased quality

Hello PPH users,

A while ago we did a blog post to ask for your feedback regarding CERT and some potential changes. Today we are happy to announce the changes for which we got positive feedback from you:

  • You told us that Level 10 contained very few Sellers which made no sense. We think you are right so we renamed it to “TOP” and assigned it to the top 0.5% of active Sellers (currently around 200 Sellers)
  • Quality in services offered on PPH has increased a lot so more established Sellers deserve a higher CERT level. To achieve this we applied CERT levels in a relative fashion among Sellers which we believe makes it more fair and competitive for you. This means that the top 0.5% of you get assigned the TOP level badge, the next 5% get Level 5, the next 10% level 4 and so on.
  • We did some minor changes in the algorithm to keep it up to date.

Looking forward to receiving your comments as always.

Best regards,
Christos

So that explains why I jumped from Cert 4 to Cert 5 this morning?

You’ve listened to us! Is this a positive change at PPH? Long may it continue 🙂

Please can you explain what the new criteria are as it seems completely messed up! I can see someone in the top 5 sellers who has done one job. Does that really reflect great quality on such a small sample data? What about all the other sellers who have been working really hard over the last several months trying to gain new clients and get good feedback etc. Now it seems they are being punished?

I completely don’t agree with this update. Now it makes no sense to those who worked so hard to get to top10. Now even those who were at Level 4 are ranked as ‘so called TOP CERT’ without having worked as much as the people in top10 did. The urge to get in TOP10 made everyone work so hard that it tend to increase the quality of work but with this new update, it seems like all the hardwork done for so many months has gone useless and i am not at all happy with this new update. Moreover the… Read more »

No doubt a few people will be unhappy with this update…but personally I think it’s a smart move. I’ve been approaching the Top 10 for some months, hovering between place 11 and 12. I imagine some people in my position, having been chasing the top 10 so much, might be peeved to find themselves lumped with the top 200-ish. But a top 10 ranking just doesn’t make sense considering how large PPH is these days. Christos’ post says that approx 200 people are now in the Top Seller category, which reflects 0.5% of active sellers. That suggests there are approximately… Read more »

Now I see the reason I dropped down to 547 from 140 in 30 minutes. Is this a part of algorithm upgrade? Sorry to state this, but I think this CERT is completely useless and faulty. This not only does not help buyers to pick the right person, but makes them take wrong decisions too. Because I have seen lots of freelancers in level 4 with 1 finished job (cheap one). And there exist lots of competent qualified freelancers who stuck at 4 as well. CERT5 is not an exception for this. I don’t know how this thing works. When… Read more »

My heart gave a little leap when I saw myself ranked at 18 in the category ‘Top’ but, upon closer examination, I noticed that a few characters has disappeared from view and the site should have displayed 187th . Seriously though, I don’t really see how you can arrive at a grade based on both quality and sales volume but I suspect that this ‘carrot’ is more about increasing sales volume (and PPH commission) than quality. I am still a bit peeved at a great review, received several months back, where the feedback was glowing but only 4 stars were… Read more »

It seems many people are not looking at the big picture and are just so happy they have reached a higher level. However, it is not clear what is going on and how it is now worked out. But people just don’t care because they have had their CERT increased. What that means now guys is that the market will be even MORE competitive because everyone is a high CERT. So don’t get too excited as now as a cert 5, you have all the top sellers to compete with. Therefore, you’re essentially a cert 4 again, the second highest… Read more »

Completely agree with Sabrina Most of the people are just way too happy seeing their CERT increasing to so called ‘TOP CERT’ but believe me, this will hurt you guys in the long run. Those who were in top 10 must have worked extremely hard to get there and not they look like fools because everyone else is now having the same reputation as them. Rankings are personal and they can’t be seen unless you are really crazy about them and you go about searching FREELANCERS through PPH search. TOP50 is a better option. I can imagine the original top 10 won’t like this, but as someone who has forever been in the top 50-30 bracket, I think this is great. Top 10 was too small a number, too few to meet the demands of so many highly sought after clients, certainly all in similar categories as well. This opens it up for clients enormously, and will no doubt share the job invites amongst more freelancers. Maybe being in the top 200 isn’t so much of an accolade (top 100 would be nicer, heck top 50), but honestly, all I want is recognition and… Read more »

Cert 4 going to Top Cert is not as bad as the Cert 1s making it up there now! One of my protégées has only one review… from me! And they have overtaken me now! It makes absolutely no sense! I agree with a top 50 – that is a reasonable amount to aim for. I mean, OK a top 200 is not even that silly, but at least have a plausible algorithm, because right now it makes no sense. I am telling you guys there is no criteria on how many clients you have served. How many projects you have delivered. How many repetitive clients you have got. How many 5 star reviews you have. How long you have been working on the site. It is just how much MONEY you have making consistently on the site. There is just one criteria of this cert. How much commision PPH is earning from his seller. If the seller has done some 10,000 USD project. Even he does one project in 6 months he will be TOP CERT. Thats a SHAME… Read more »

You said it: MONEY… but surely thats the point? If you’re earning the most, and have happy clients it makes a lot of sense to be given a higher cert. That’s how markets work… If you earn the least, and have dissatisfied customers, you typically go out of business. Under the old system I was frustrated that I have 100% feedback, and put quite a bit of money through PPH – yet did not progress beyond cert 4.

Rahul Parashar
Rahul Parashar

Yeah thats why the system has a BUG which PPH will never ACCEPT. They have people on CERT 5 which have done handful of jobs but have done BIG job. They will never disclose their criteria and what they have disclosed is that what is implemented in their algo. All their algo of TRENDING and CERT has major BUGS which they should consider fixing soon if they want to keep this market place alive. Else they will not only lose their hard working Sellers but also the cream Clients Here are some things to consider for CERT as milestone as… Read more »

PPH seems to have evolved somewhat from when I first had a look many years ago and now we are planning to run a business on the back of the site! I completely agree with you Sabrina. Freelancers on PPH are excited about the new HIGHER CERT but the algorithm update has put CERT2 holders in TOP CERT so this is getting really confusing. The previous CERT was simpler.

PPH now is all about SELL CHEAP to CHEAP clients if you want to survive here. They are turning PPH into fiver A BIG client will never have coffee in a TEA stall that is sold at 5 cent, he will go to some good 5 STAR hotel and love to have it for $10 with great quality, hospitality and customer service. Again I agree with Rahul. Let me add something: Now these things are COMPLETELY useless: CERT – Endorsements – Trending Hourlies And buyers will notice this shortly. It is shockingly odd that NOTHING affects this CERT but the amount of earned money. I have a question which no one from PPH replies: “Is it fair for someone with more than 700 finished projects, hundreds of excellent feedback, and several years of membership to be next to (and even lower than) the person with 1 or 10 feedback and few days of membership? Is this PPH’s standard and trend?” I know… Read more »

@Sean and they say that repeat clients leads to a better reputation here in PPH. Their ranking algo is nonsense, if they need to make it perfect they need to consider following factors 1. Number of projects done – Also consider value of the project. Equal weightage should be given to a $100 job and 10 jobs of $10 each. But also you should consider promoting a seller level when we has done a least number of jobs and served least number of clients. Sean, here is the same but worse. Before this so-called upgrade, I used to be 138-142. After the UPGRADE I became 540th in few minutes and now, I am 563rd. I have also sent an email and they escalated it to a senior support. Still there is no reply and I guess what their reply would be: “We are sorry, but this is a part of this new algorithm…….”

I am still confused… yes, money would seem to be the main factor as that would make sense, but please explain to me why there are people in cert 5 and Top cert who have taken in less than £100 as their TOTAL EARNINGS…ever???? That makes no sense. Therefore, the algorithm is completely messed up and it cannot be anything to do with money. I have taken in over £1000 since the new rollout, but my place hasn’t moved. So, for me, it is still not clear. Frankly, I don’t think PPH knows what they have done either… otherwise they… Read more »

Hello PPH users, Thanks for your comments and feedback! First of all, we believe it is more fair to award the TOP CERT level to a number of top Sellers which is relative to the total number of active Sellers in the community. It is more adaptive and it will motivate more Sellers to try to get to that level. Moreover assigning the TOP CERT level to the top 0.5% of Sellers is in our opinion strict enough. We know that many Sellers who do not belong to the TOP CERT level are hard-working and offer high quality services but… Read more »

Periklis Vassiliou,

One issue with regard to refunds; earlier this week a bid of mine was accepted after I spent a fair amount of time answering the buyer’s questions.

He accepted, paid the amount requested in to escrow, and I started the work. Within the hour he had ‘changed his mind’ and wanted a refund – which obviously I generated.

How would such a refund appear in the CERT ratings? Where the buyer is playing silly buggers?

I would like the statement “UK writers only for this project” or “US writers only for this project” to be displayed at the top of each ad. It would save me time as well as the client. I think the new CERT system is good. I freelance full time and 90% of my work comes through pph, and that’s refelcted in the cert that I have.
