PeoplePerHour stats suggest UK unemployment will continue to rise

Press Release: London, 10 September 2009 –The proportion of new PeoplePerHour.com registrants who are unemployed continues to grow as jobless Britons turn to the website in their thousands in search of freelance work.

Next Wednesday 16 September, National Statistics will reveal the latest UK unemployment figures. Despite the emergence of economic ‘green shoots’ in recent weeks, it is widely anticipated that the number of jobless Brits will continue to rise for several months.

PeoplePerHour.com – the website that matches businesses with ad hoc workers – has seen a rise in the proportion of new registrants who are unemployed. The site has grown rapidly since January, when it had 19,000 registered members. Today there are more than 40,000 Brits actively using the service.

One year ago, 15 percent of new signups to the site cited unemployment as their principle reason for joining the service. Six months ago the figure had risen to 25 percent. Today, roughly 35 percent of all new signups to PeoplePerHour.com are people who have recently been made redundant.

PeoplePerHour.com has proven a godsend for individuals who have found themselves out of work. Anyone can register for free, list their skills and get invited to bid to work on freelance projects that fit those skills.

Recovery from recessions has historically taken time to filter down to the job market. PeoplePerHour.com founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou does not expect this economic downturn to be an exception.

“We’re seeing more and more new registrants cite unemployment as their main reason for joining PeoplePerHour.com,” he says. “Whilst losing a job can be devastating for individuals and their families, thanks to technologies like PeoplePerHour.com it is much easier to find occasional freelance work in this recession. Thousands of jobless Brits are generating an income in this way whilst they seek permanent employment.”
