Figures from PeoplePerHour.com (http://www.peopleperhour.com) – Europe’s biggest online marketplace for businesses – reveal that the value of digital freelance work between April and June jumped 272% compared to the same period last year.
The three biggest growth areas of work are banner and icon design (up 529%), ecommerce (up 296%) and IT training (up 93%).
Over the last 12 months the performance has been even stronger, with the total value of digital work surging 373%.This equates to a monthly compounded growth of 14%.
“The headline numbers are very impressive,” observed PeoplePerHour.com founder and CEO Xenios Thrasyvoulou. “But the key factor behind this growth has been the outstanding performance from UK freelancers 'exporting' their services abroad, which grew at 608% in the year.
“These figures should prove food for thought for those involved in the government’s campaign to boost exports. The British tech sector is obviously traveling well and consistently winning overseas work, a trend that’s being supported by the weakness of the pound.
“But policymakers need to take a long-term view and active consulting with key stakeholders in the digital sector. Adequate levels of support will ensure the future of this increasingly successful – and essential – industry.”
