In Victorian times, women who wanted to supplement the household income took in sewing. Today their 21st century counterparts are logging on to the internet in the evening and making money from blogging, freelance research or selling goods on Ebay, as widespread broadband internet connections spawn a growing range of digital cottage industries.

The number of British people with an Ebay business has grown by 160 per cent in the past two years to 178,000. Peopleperhour , a website that allows people to advertise freelance and homeworking services, has seen the number on its books grow from 5,500 a year ago to 21,500 today.

Tech firms are preparing themselves for a bleak winter. Will innovation suffer?

The UK is facing its first recession since the far off days of the early 1990s, but for one sector in particular, memories of hard economic times are a good deal fresher. Rewind to 2001 and the collapse of the dotcom dream. Investment in IT projects dried up, job losses mounted, and the office blocks of the M4 corridor were suddenly characterised by clusters of To Let signs. Internet companies were particularly hard hit. Those job losses are back: Motorola, HP and Xerox all announced redundancy packages recently and the dotcoms look set to follow suit. The danger is that pessimism will begin to feed through to the investment community.

Business Briefing - Credit Crunch Bites

AS the credit crunch bites, small business owners are increasingly turning to freelance workers rather than employing permanent staff.

Last month, the Office of National Statistics reported that unemployment levels were at a 16-year high.

Experts say this is reflected in a trend for business owners to use freelancers as and when they need them because they are more flexible and less costly.

PeoplePerHour.com, a website where businesses post projects for temporary staff, said it has seen interest in using freelancers rise steadily in recent months.

Founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou says: 'Outsourcing is still mainly associated with multinationals farming parts of their business offshore, but we are now seeing an unprecedented level of outsourcing by SMEs across all disciplines.'

Flog it!

Freelance work is another flexible option. allowing you to tap into the skills you developed during your work career. This is something 54 year old Charles Crawford started doing this year. At the end of 2007 he retired from a 28 year career in the UK's diplomatic service which had seen him serving as an ambassador in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Poland.

"I wanted a change," he explains. "I took early retirement and we moved back to England where I am building up a number of freelance careers including training and coaching diplomats, mediating and writing.

One of the tools Charles uses to help him find work is PeoplePerHour.com. This website was set up by Xenios Thrasyvoulou in 2007 and uses some of the same principles as eBay. "If you're looking for freelance work you can upload your profile for free. Over time you'll build up a track record, in much the same way as on eBay. People post up the work they have on offer and you can bid for it, with the successful bidder being the person whose experience and track record fits best," explains Thrasyvoulou.

Seven months into freelancing, Charles has the following advice for anyone considering supplementing their income in a similar way. "Put the formalities such as the accounts in place first as this will save time," he says. "I'd also recommend setting up a website. Mine (charlescrawford.biz) has been very useful as a shop window."
