Supportive spouses key to success for freelancers
Apparently, having a supportive spouse is the key to success in business. Not that as freelancers, we don’t know that. 

New research by Bibby Financial Services, has revealed that 38 per cent of spouses whose partners ran a business, thought that working at the weekends was acceptable. 44 per cent of spouses also thought that ‘working late at the office’ into the night was not to be ruled out and in fact, was necessary at times.

Small businesses take to twittering
A recent poll conducted by O2 the mobile phone company has found that 17 per cent of small businesses are now using  Twitter for their business communications. Indeed, 28 per cent of these have opened a Twitter account in the last four weeks.

Freelancers’ costs are coming down
Owners of small businesses are paying less for core goods and services than for a number of years, according to research carried out by More Than.

Small business costs were down by 2.9% in the last quarter of 2008, with cheaper fuel, insurance and raw materials. However, the figure for the whole year was 3.6% for small businesses, although it was less for micro firms – including “one-man bands” – at only 3%.

IT Hit By Credit Crunch
It appears that IT projects around risk management, post-acquisition integration and cost-cutting are going to be the hot topics this year according to analyst house IDC. Small businesses won’t welcome Post Office sell-off
Many small businesses look set to be disappointed by the sell-off of Royal Mail. A poll among its members by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) showed that nearly half of the respondents wanted the country’s mail to remain in public hands.

However, the Government appears to be set on selling a minority stake to a rival operator as part of the group’s overhaul.

Freelance journalist Paul Smith has conceived the brilliant plan to travel across the world to raise money for Charity:water, using the Twitter community as his sole support. Free Legal Support
The National Union of Journalists is offer free legal support to its members in cases of copyright infringement. This is under a deal that the NUJ has negotiated with Thompsons Solicitors. This is an expanded service which will be available to members in England and Wales. However, only those cases where claims are deemed to have 'a reasonable chance of success' will be accepted by the union.

Government has been no help to small businesses
Small businesses in the UK are unhappy with the support – or rather the lack of it – that they are receiving from the Government.

A poll of 4,000 small traders by the Federation of Small Businesses concluded that government efforts to stimulate the economy had so far had “no impact”. As evidence to support this claim, the federation said that over half of firms were seeing a slide in their sales of products and services in the last couple of months.

Social networking sites still an untapped resource for majority of freelancers
It has been recently found by a recent survey conducted by  BT Tradespace that the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter  and YouTube  by  freelancers and small businesses has more than doubled from 7% last year to 15% at the same time this year.  However, it was found that only 13% regularly log on to their chosen site.

The demand for freelance marketers has taken a knock in recent times, and recruiters at Xchangeteam report a “fairly significant” decline in request for freelancers compared with this time last year.
