New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that almost nine out of ten internet users in the UK have broadband, allowing an increasing number to work from home.
In the connected 21st century, more and more people are choosing to set up freelance operations and work from their living rooms or home offices, while the government has promised to extend flexible working rights to allow for more homeworkers.
An internet connection is a prerequisite for many of these individuals, and high-bandwidth broadband means that business can be conducted more smoothly from home.
The ONS statistics show that 88.4 per cent of web users had broadband in September, which represented an increase of 26 per cent since the same month in 2006.
Nearly half of these connections are faster than two megabits per second, and the proportion of slower speed connections has been steadily decreasing for some time.
Back in 2003, four out of five internet users had dial-up modems, and less than a fifth had broadband.
With the rise of online marketplaces such as PeoplePerHour.com, fast internet is a boon for freelance workers.
