New pay-gap and employment laws to be proposed
Posted by peopleperhour.com - 26/06/2008 12:50
All forms of age discrimination are to be outlawed if the government successfully brings in new legislation, the BBC has reported.

Although discrimination over age in work environments has been illegal since 2006, other areas such as travel insurance and health cover will now be targeted, in a change to the Equities Bill expected to be announced today.

The gender pay gap is also the focus of some new measures, although official statistics have showed that the gap in pay between men and women has been falling since 1997, latest figures show that for every pound earned in the UK by a man, a woman earns only 87p.

A new plan to outlaw secrecy clauses in work contracts regarding the discussion of salaries is also likely to come in with the proposed legislation.

One area expected to cause controversy is the possible plan to allow employers to give jobs to people specifically because of their race or gender.
