Growing opportunities in freelancing websites

There is no doubt that in many sectors there are now fewer available roles and hence freelancers face much greater competition in the present recession. Indeed the numbers of people entering the freelance market are increasing as unemployment soars and job seekers are turning to freelance work.

John Challenger of the consulting firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas said: "More and more people are taking up part time roles, project jobs, freelancing positions. You have to fight and push for them just like you would a full-time job."

There are a number of freelance websites such as PeoplePerHour which can really help those seeking freelance assignments and offer great opportunities for networking.

Indeed, in the past five months the number of people using freelancing sites has increased by at least 50 per cent.

Although it’s true that there are more freelancers fighting for fewer assignments, it’s not all doom and gloom by any means. Many freelancers are rising to the present challenges by extending their portfolio of skills and becoming more flexible at the same time by relaxing their preferences.

For many creative freelancers it’s certainly “business as usual”. Glenn Bramble-Stewart a freelance architectural designer said: “In the last few months and certainly the last 12 months I have seen a big upturn in freelance enquiries and my skills are very much in demand.”
