Freelancers’ costs are coming down

Owners of small businesses are paying less for core goods and services than for a number of years, according to research carried out by More Than.

Small business costs were down by 2.9% in the last quarter of 2008, with cheaper fuel, insurance and raw materials. However, the figure for the whole year was 3.6% for small businesses, although it was less for micro firms – including “one-man bands” – at only 3%.

The fourth quarter figures should help provide a platform for freelancers during the current recession.

One freelance writer, based in Surrey, said that he had re-evaluated his situation and was looking more to the public sector for help, as private company profits were being squeezed.

Gill Taylor, a freelance copywriter and marketer, said that she was being asked to develop referral programmes by her clients, and that networking and recommendations were a good idea.

Optimism among freelancers is based on companies looking for good value, but not everyone has the good feeling.

Freelance photographer John Hyam felt that photography could be seen as a “luxury”, and has cancelled magazine subscriptions and online memberships in anticipation of hard times.
