Free Legal Support

The National Union of Journalists is offer free legal support to its members in cases of copyright infringement. This is under a deal that the NUJ has negotiated with Thompsons Solicitors. This is an expanded service which will be available to members in England and Wales. However, only those cases where claims are deemed to have 'a reasonable chance of success' will be accepted by the union.

The increase in online publishing was a key issue in the decision to change the legal provision in order to protect members from plagiarism and loss of earnings.

"Copyright protection has always been a big issue for our members but, with today's digital media, people believe it is easier than ever to get away with using work without the owner's permission. Well, just because something is easy doesn't mean it is legal," said Mr Toner, freelance organiser for the NUJ.

The new deal is hoped to enable NUJ members to be able to punish those people or organisations who either do not understand to take no heed of copyright law. According to Mr Toner, there are a number of unscrupulous people who believe that they can get away with cheating journalists out of their rightful income by infringing copyright issues.
