Demand for freelance copywriters outstripping supply

Freelance copywriters took home larger pay packets in 2007, research suggests.

Many creative recruiters speaking to Freelance UK said that pay rates had increased because there is more demand for good copywriting skills than there is supply.

Recruiter Xchangeteam noted that the secret to getting pay premiums is having broad experience, whether the job in hand is 'above the line' (big budget projects often involving marketing taglines) or 'below the line' (direct marketing, press releases, websites and so on).

The company believes that daily pay for senior copywriters increased from an average of £250 a day in 2006 to a minimum of £300 per day last year.

As well as this, junior freelance copywriters could expect to earn at least £150 a day, but this had risen to £200 per day in 2007.

"These rates do reflect the overall market mainly due to demand being higher than supply," said Xchangeteam's Emma Brierley.

"Good copywriters are not always easy to find and when you have good ones who've worked on a number of projects with a breadth of experience, they are in demand and can therefore demand their rate."
