Thousands of middle class professionals are looking to earn extra income in order to deal with the credit crunch and soaring prices.
According to figures obtained by City analysts Capital Economics, the number of people with second jobs is currently at record levels with around 1.15m people now having extra jobs. This figure represents a 5% increase since the start of the credit crunch and is the highest recorded number in the last five years.
Most people are exploiting their job skills to earn extra money; designers, programmers and sales executives are just a few examples of professionals looking to find freelance work and sell their skills to supplement their income.
One of the most popular ways of finding extra work is through specialist websites that allow users to market their skills and submit proposals for relevant projects. This allows people to offer their services remotely from the comfort of their home and do so in a way that does not interfere with their full-time job.
“We have a lot of people who say they are under-used at work and can go online and find extra to do,” said Xenios Thrasyvoulou, chief executive and founder of PeoplePerHour.com, the leading site offering freelance services in the UK.
The site currently has over 7,000 users advertising their services and Thrasyvoulou estimates it is growing at 35% a month. |
