Creative subjects vital for economy

Creative subjects have been treated as second best for too long says Les Ebdon, vice chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire. It is time that the government invested as much in the creative industries as it does in science and engineering.
Courses in artistic and creative subjects should be given a much higher profile in line with the economic returns that they in fact generate. Professor Ebdon cited a recent report which shows that creative industries as computer game design, fashion and advertising boost the economy to the tune of £60 billion a year, plus exports worth £10.3 billion. In total, the creative industries in the UK currently account for 7.3 per cent of the economy.
The world is changing and young people should no longer be deterred from choosing to study creative subjects at university, which are now acknowledged as being vital to the economy. "So often youngsters who've chosen to study creative subjects at university are told that there will be no future for them. What we can see from this report is that, without them, there's no future for this country,” said the professor.
As creativity gains more respect in the economy and such courses receive the status they deserve, it may be that future graduates in creative subjects will seek out freelancing and flexible working opportunities in the marketplace. |
