Aspiring freelancers advised to “fly with it”
A recent article in The Times highlights some interviews with experts in the field of freelancing. They have a wealth of advice for newcomers which is summarised briefly.
Founder of FreelanceUK.com Helen James says that freelancers can learn the essentials “on the job” and that the best way is to talk to other freelancers.
Some excellent networking resources are Facebook, LinkedIn or FreelanceUK’s freelance Alliance where collaboration can “increase business opportunities”.
Divisional head at Major Players Karine Lionnet says that freelancers should keep their CV updated, continue to add to their portfolio and use a good specialist agent. Other advice included being absolutely conscientious on every assignment. Ms Lionnet commented: Treat every freelance contract as your first day on a new job.” This is because personal recommendation goes a long way in obtaining new work.
Another piece of advice to freelancers is to hire an accountant, Ms Lionnet believes. She added: “As soon as you finish the job, write the invoice.”
PeoplePerHour founder Xenios Thrasyvoulou said that many freelancers have previously unmarketed skills which they are now using, and added: “We’ve got accountants with a second language who are doing a few hours a week translation."
A major advantage of freelancing is that one’s time is one’s own. Former stockbroker Joby Ingram-Dodd is now planning to attempt the world skydiving record. He pointed out that he would not even have considered this had he remained a full time stockbroker.
