Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: less than 1 week
A one page A4 document which will be the basis of a landing page for a website about ageing management which will be part of a much larger programme helping people to take charge of their health.
Aimed at an intelligent, largely university educated, audience who are well read and literate, in the age group 60+.
Tone whilst serious and professional should not be stuffy or academic but engaging, interesting and persuasive. Must be accurate and properly referenced where necessary (Harvard referencing system).
Successful candidate will be commissioned for continuing writing/researching.
General outline
The Problem - ageing population, increasing life expectancy, but ‘disability free life expectancy’ not increasing. Anxieties about health in old age, especially Alzheimers and other dementias.
People are paid up to ‘The Myth’ - ‘downhill all the way’ ageing irreversible and inexorable.
Modern understanding and research shows that this is not the case; not all in our genes, and lifestyle choices strongly determine risk for the ‘Chronic Diseases of Western Civilisation’. We are able to make choices to influence our future health. List some research which shows this.
The Myth, Part Two - it is downhill all the way for most normal people because to make any worthwhile changes you have to spend your whole time exercising, live on salad, and never have a drink. Again, not so. Discuss research which shows relatively minor changes bring worthwhile responses. Some examples of real people will also be good; from the extremes like Eddie Brocklesby and Charles Eugster to ordinary groups of people who in trials have responded well to fairly low key interventions.
