Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: less than 1 week
Industry: Technology
Kind of design: Theme/template
Ideas for the visual style: Flat design
Extra notes: Project scope:
We are looking for an experienced UI designer, who in conjunction with our team, will work to define the ideal controls location, functionalities and behaviours of a website builder. Front-end development knowledge would be an advantage but it is not necessary.
*** This job is not for the complete design of the tool. We are expecting you to design few elements in order to for us to be in a position to choose a candidate to continue the project. Following this job we will select a designer to complete the project and work on the design of the entire website. We will be looking at efficiency, creativity in applying solutions and quality of the communication. ***
Time scale: 1 week
Project description:
We are developing a website builder. The tool will be marketed to a wide range of users, from people without any experience with web design to experienced website developers. The objective is to help us figure out the best UI interface for inexperienced users (a 7 years old kid should be able to work it out) while keeping in mind that advanced user will be given access to more complex functionalities.
We established the main functionalities and generated several wireframes to illustrate what we have in mind so far (we will supply a copy of the wireframes extracted from gomockingbird.com).
We would like to use the Metronic theme as a baseline and customise the styling and location of the elements. (themeforest.net/item/metronic-responsive-admin-dashboard-template/4021469)
You will have to establish the visual appearance and supply graphics in PSD format with the different layout combinations and explanations of how the dynamic interaction would work. The Metronic theme comes with the baseline PSD files. Alternatively you can work directly with the theme files (we initiated a prototype).
The builder interface should be simple, clean and intuitive. The attention should be drawn on the website the user is developing and not the builder controls. Think of apple (simplicity, flat design, white background, good contrast, easy to read font,...)
In order to have a good understanding of the project, it would be advisable to test some benchmark website builders. You can open a free account with each of these and have access to most of the functionalities. These are the competitors we think have most intuitive mobile builders or have developed a new, interesting approach to build websites:
Responsive design:
www.dudamobile.com/dudaone
weebly.com
squarespace.com
sitejam.com
wix.com
yola.com
jimdo.com
happytables.com
Mobile website:
activemobi.com
dudamobile.com
codiqa.com
proto.io
appery.io
01.org/rib/ (Chrome only)
mobimaster.com
mosaic.netobjects.com
This is a brief description of the different elements we are looking for:
Assets panel:
- Suggest different solutions to represent the panel close/open handle (left sidebar).
- Suggest different layout width and proportion of the icons, text and elements.
- Help tooltips window design (? Next to the control)
Properties panel:
- Suggest different solutions to represent the panel pin/auto hide option (right sidebar).
- Suggest different layout width and proportion of the icons, text and elements.
- Design the properties control for 3 elements (button, image and select menu). The design of the other elements will done later.
Controls in the top navigation bar:
- Some control could have a hover popup out menu (like on semrush.com user interface) and others could open a modal window when clicking on the link.
- Whenever possible use Icon as opposed to text to save space.
Layout for the following controls (menu style or modal window):
Select preview device
Select a page
Build/Test mode selection
Website completeness indicator
Help
For all the elements:
- Always consider that the builder will be translated in different languages. It will need to accommodate for longer text.
We very much like to work as a team where every member is involved in the complete process of development. Everyone’s opinion is valid. We are looking for someone that is keen to get involved, and give recommendations on all UI aspect and beyond.
If we find the right partner, we will continue the development of the builder interface and the rest of the website (user account, theme selection, …). We also have other projects that will require a good designer.
Best Regards,
Patrice
