Description
Experience Level: Entry
Estimated project duration: 1 - 2 weeks
Num. of articles: 1
Words per article: 500
Blog/website url: www.edu-gaming.com
Information for the blog/website: Game-based learning
Industry: Education
Topic: KSP and the speed of light
Tone: Instructional/Educational
Outline & Structure: Suggested structure
Introduction:
- Games thought of as simulations.
- The difficulty in teaching extreme scales. e.g. speed of light, nano-particles, the cosmological constant - visual/practical analogies can help.
Body:
- What is the speed of light.
- KSP features mass-less components including mono-propellant thrusters. This is to make gameplay and building spaceships easier.
- In conjunction with using the unlimited fuel cheat. The quirk above can be used to make spaceships that can travel with unreal acceleration.
- This can provide a demonstration of how fast the speed of light actually is and why it is so difficult to approach it. In reality bodies gain mass the faster they travel (mass in special relativity).
Video that will be featured with article:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNMnDrLCW60
In video when ship is moving towards Jool (time: 8.20) it is still only travelling at 3-4% the speed of light.
Conclusions:
- Quirks/bugs/glitches in a game's physics engine as a source for education - exploring limits using a simulation.
- limitations of using games - not a completely accurate simulation of reality. Used in the context of teaching principles.
Extensive research needed: yes
