Website build completion (Wordpress)

I am after someone to complete the build of a website for me.

The site is essentially a portfolio site with image sliders and image viewers, separated into different portfolio sections.

I have a Wordpress theme which has been installed but I'm struggling to get to grips with the mechanics of it all and as a result can't work out the following-

How to create new pages without them seeming to be a blog page.

Currently pages appear as follows:

www.websitename.com/blog/fashion

Whereas what I am after is:

www.websitename.com/fashion

Ideally I would also like to be able to simply upload images via an FTP site (something I am more familiar with) so assume this may require some rewriting of the code.

Apologies if this all seems a bit vague, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to word press themes and after spending a day trying to get to grips with it have decided to outsource.

Once I have settled on a freelance to carry out the work I would like to speak with you to discuss in more detail exactly what I'm after.
