Hi Tony,
Unfortunately, it is not clear what exactly you want. Could you please provide some further details?

Thanks

The data is numeric in entirety. It consists of basic sum formulae which allow categories to be totalled. Within each cell of the category there must be a sum of "integers" which are individually linked back to a separate numeric database.
e.g The database numeric value is converted into a tag/value/integer this is then linked to a specific cell and the total under that category increases by one unit value (1) multiple converted tag/value/integers are then added to the same cell or others but must only increase the value within that cell by one unit/transaction. hence the cells are sums of the total number of added converted values. Does that help? I have thought that perhaps excel alone may not be enough and something like access may be needed who knows? I cannot be more specific as i have no knowledge of how secure this conversation is.
Tony.

Hi,

I have extensive experience with Excel/VBA and connecting to external db's from Excel.
Could you clarify exactly what it is you are trying to do, prehaps give an example workbook ?
What is the database you are connecting to mysql/sqlservver/access/oracle ?
It sounds like something I could help you with, but I would need more details to bid
cheers

Ok Peter this is how it works...

I have a numeric value say 12345678902 which then needs to be converted into a strawberry, but this strawberry has to have a unique number of pips on it so that it can be recognised in reverse.
In the excel spreadsheet, each cell will have a certain number of strawberries entered., across several categories/titles and the strawberries must also be able to be "owned" by which ever user inputs the data. (may be up to 10 users) then essentially I need to count the absolute number of strawberries e.g 5 unique converted numeric values in a cell = five strawberries in total, as well as the total number of strawberries owned by a user. The final totals do not have to have the ciphers/tags of the unique strawberries identified merely the absolute number of strawberries from which ever source.
Should I then wish to reverse the process later on and confirm the origin of a unique strawberry in a cell and know fropm which user it was created, and then use that numeric value in another application this MUST be possible.
I would also like the programmer to check the spreadsheet that i have already created and see if this is the most efficient format, and help with data conversion in charts/graphs etc.

i have been told that this is an impossible project, but i have created a simple approach by separating the database from the excel and created strawberries instead.

Hope that helps.

if you are confident about being able to complete this job then please explain in non techhie terms why you would find it so easy when others (admittedly not programmers have failed)

look forward to your response.

Hi Tony,

Ooops sorry I hadnt read your description message before asking for clarification. It sounds like what you want is a pivot table linked to an external datasource. I could help you with this. Is it possible to get a look at the workbook and see exactly what it is you are trying to do ?

Thanks
Pete

In essence your task seems confused but possible. I would need to know in real terms what you are actually trying to perform. There seems little point in converting your original numericx value to a "Strawberry" as in data processing this is like making an apple an apple they are the same thing. The remainder of the "problem" seems to rotate about ability to identify either singly or multiply who owns, owned or might own the "Strawberries". I fail to see why you have split the Database and Excel as they are essentially the same but the Databse is a conglomeration of Excels (Tables) which could query and report much more efficiently than a spreadsheet.

The need to convert to strawberries is to provide anonymity, this could be done in another Office module if possible.

Are the linked external values all of the same data type or do they differ?

When imported what data type do they need to be converted to?
