Job Description
I need to recover the data from my WD external Hard Drive My Passport 500 GB.
My friend who owns an IT company ran all his tools to try to recover data without physically opening the drive. The next stage would probably require some more advanced procedures (including opening it etc.)
It contains mainly photos, videos and music probably about 80 GB.
Thank you for bidding.

O. K. on 07/09/2010 08:34 amHi, Pavel
I tried many tool for data recovery. On my own, the best is
Active File Recovery
If file system type is NTFS then no problem at all. As NTFS has many FAT copies on a disk, It is scaned for. It even doesn't matter whether partitions were removed!
Next, external hdd is simple internal 2,5" SATA hard drive with USB interface.
So, it's opening and closing is not very dangerous. But it is needed in general.
And, of course, you know that any data writing and changing on HDD with lost data are forbidden! Only read-only scans!
M. P. on 07/09/2010 09:23 amHi Pavel,
I would suggest having another go with data recovery tools as the next stage requires the hard drive to be opened up by a specialised company in a dust free lab (I wouldn\'t ask anyone here to do that). That cost will likely be minimum of £300 and could be much higher.
If you would like assistance from myself who has recovered many disks in the past, please let me know.
I. I. on 07/09/2010 09:42 amH there,
Can you please tell me where you are and what happened to the hard disk?
Did you have a power cut or a hardware crash?
I could eventaully come and have a look as along as it is not possible to do it remotely.
Regards

E. E. on 07/09/2010 12:38 pmHi Pavel,
would you be so kind to supply some more information:
1) The type of file system on the drive.
2) Operating system (Windows/Mac/other)
3) More details on the drive status like;
a) Does the disk spin up normally?
b) Does is "show up" on the computer when you plug it in?
A proper data recovery process includes imaging the drive (create a binary copy of the whole drive) and then either scanning / carving the image file for recoverable data or fixing the file system within the image file. For a 500Gb USB drive this process can take up to 30 hours.
I do not recommend this kind of job to be done remotely as it hugely complicates the process and jeopardizes the results.

I don't usually give advice for free; but you need to stop being a tight-**** and go to a data recovery specialist, which is no doubt exactly what you're friend told you.
I know they're not cheap, but they use allot of very expensive equipment.

M. B. on 04/10/2010 11:41 amHi Pavel,
I am interested in bidding on this project as I have been able to recover data on some of my clients external hard disks in the past. However, could you please tell me where abouts you are in the world as this will affect my quotation regarding postage etc?
I would like to quote on this project, although it is always a possibility with any data recovery process that none or only some of the data could be recovered. If no data is possible to be recovered, I will provide a full refund minus the return postage. Does this sound ok to you?
Regards,
Mat Bourne
