Job Description
I'm giving an illustrated story as a gift to someone for their birthday and wanted to find a freelance illustrator who could do very simple Jungle Book-styled illustrations (or even more basic style) for it and help me set it up to get printed.
I'd like the job done in September and have £200 budget.
I imagine that it'll be about 8-10 pages of illustration on A5 size.
Let me know if you are interested!

R. F. on 02/09/2010 10:518 - 10 illustrations for £100 - £200. At best that is £25 a piece. At worst that is £10. How many minutes do you want the illustrator to spend on each piece? - (assuming that is that they are providing their materials for free and they have already got their pencils to hand)
P. E. on 03/09/2010 01:11Is this budget per illustration? I suspect not. Check out cegur.com for a more realistic pricing:

You need to put a more realistic budget forward in order to pay for skilled professionals. At the moment all you are doing is getting monkeys bidding on this project.
As it stands this project has no commercial value.

J. C. on 04/09/2010 15:50Hi Jake, I assume you want it in colour? Will the pictures be of people or animals (if so what animals)?
cheers
Juliet
(...Guys, if you don't want it don't bid. Plenty of other people will and have. Also read the email - budget of £200 means at worst £20 per pic -how long does it take you to do a simple A5 illustration? £20-40 an hour is fine by a lot of people. How long did it take you to complain on the message board?)
P. E. on 07/09/2010 13:42Hi Juliet,
Regarding your note below, whilst I appreciate your position I cant agree with you that £20 per picture is a reasonable budget, even for a private piece such as this.
Even if you are fortunate and talented enough to be able to produce high quality images quickly (in which case you could ask a LOT more than £20ph) you would also have to liase to clarify the brief, develop your visual ideas to your own satisfaction, do the drawings and then deliver them. On top of that, Jake is asking for help in preparing for print, which even if he plans to print at home can be a nightmare and gets more complex if he wants a commercial print job. It also takes you from the realm of illustrator to graphic designer.
You are right that there are many who will bid for the job, my oncern is not that they are producing poor work but rather that they are opening themselvs up to explotation and by doing so undermining an industry upon which I depend.
There is an interesting conversation about this deveoping on the PPH Freelance Design forum if you'd like to join in...

B. B. on 08/09/2010 08:36Hi, I completely agree with Juliet. Jake is not asking for a something super professional, he says it himself "a very simple jungle book-styled..". £20 a picture is fine for me too. I am still waiting for an answer as it is something I have done in the past for a friend and would be keen on doing this one.
Jake, if you could let us know what you have decided? Thanks!
