Work Experience

My interests and experience in research and writing are genuinely wide, which makes me an excellent choice for a whole range of writing and editing projects: I\'m a good listener, too, so will always ensure that my work is tailored to suit your needs, and your audience.

I have a wide range of skills in organizing and managing projects, legal cases, and higher education courses across a number of disciplines and workplaces. I have excellent networking and communications skills, and am used to delivering oral and written information to a wide range of audiences and to tight deadlines.

I was a practising commercial and chancery barrister at Exchange Chambers 2002-2005; I left to do voluntary work overseas and when I returned to the UK also returned to lecturing as well as doing consultancy work for small charities.

In legal practice, my areas of expertise were unmarried property disputes; landlord and tenant; contract disputes (especially building contracts); property and inheritance disputes; and Customs tribunal work. In addition to advisory and advocacy work, I created and delivered Continuing Professional Development seminars for fellow legal professionals.

I have been a university lecturer in both the UK and the USA, in Rhetoric, Film Studies, Literature and Philosophy; most recently, I was a Senior Lecturer and BA Film & Literature Course Leader. In addition to my freelance work, I\'m a published author of academic articles and have a lot of experience on teaching and assessing work with a focus on grammar, spelling and clarity of expression. I have a lot of experience in supervising student dissertations and theses, as well as proofreading and editing academic papers of many types.

Additionally, I have experience in Spanish to English translation (from my voluntary work with NGOs in Bolivia), and of copy-writing in the Third Sector and for environmental NGOs overseas.

I run a community project in Lesotho and now work freelance to enable me the flexibility to develop this project into a charity.

HOURLY RATE: Please note my rate varies depending on the type of work I undertake. It ranges from approximately GBP14/hour for proofreading to around GBP30/hour for legal drafting.

Education

I have an MA (First Class Hons) in Philosophy (Aberdeen 1994); MA Communication Studies (Film Studies) (University of Iowa, USA 1996); PhD Cultural Studies (Sheffield Hallam University 2001); PgDL and BVC (Nottingham Law School 2001/2002); TEFL certificate 2005; Proofreading certificate (Chapterhouse 1998; re-took course 2010); CPD courses in both HE and legal sectors, including running courses on debt recovery and taking courses on supervising postgraduate research students.
