About Me
Experienced researcher fluent in Chinese with expertise in Chinese economics, politics and culture, and in particular Chinese commerce in Africa. I also have 5 years experience as a Chinese-to-English translator. Last but not least, I am a Chinese teacher holding private or small group lessons on weekday evenings for beginners.
RESEARCH:
I am a researcher specialising in China and I have worked in this position in the private sector and with NGOs. Most recently I worked on a report that was published in The Economist. I studied at The School of Oriental and African Studies.
Focus of research includes, but not limited to:
- Chinese companies; their organisation, business activities and market performance
- Chinese market research
- Chinese politics
- Chinese business in Africa
I know the market leaders and experts in a variety of sectors and I am familiar with a broad range of Chinese language online resources.
I provide research services in Chinese and English language and my rates are competitive. I will do an initial hour of research at half price and give you a brief report, after which I can help you to decide whether continuing with the research is likely to be a valuable investment or not.
TRANSLATION:
With over five years experience in Chinese-to-English translation I am proficient in translating news articles, company reports, hand-written letters and technical documents. I have a very nuanced understanding of the language - see attached HSK certificate. As a native English-speaker educated to degree level the translations I provide are in good English, with no grammar mistakes or ugly prose.
I provide two types of translation services:
First Draft Translation: a quick and professional translation of a document for informational rather than publication purposes. For this translation I may use assisted translation software, though the final translation will be fully edited by myself. I can usually do between 250-600 words an hour (depending on content).
Managed Translation and Feedback: translation with separate editing. This is a full translation for which I add translator notes to the first draft and then make additional edits in consultation with the client. This is the best option if you want an accurate and reliable finished translation document for publication purposes. Such a translation can however take much longer (150-300 words an hour depending on content).
For each job I can provide a free estimate based on word count and content.
CHINESE TEACHING:
For me, teaching Chinese is a real pleasure. For you as a beginner, learning Chinese will more often be painful. With us balanced in perfect equilibrium, I can help you to overcome the language's main challenges and uncover its great riches.
Teaching philosophy:
I endeavour to use the most effective language teaching methods with my students. These methods reflect well-established approaches to language learning, the particular idiosyncrasies of Chinese, and my own experiences of learning foreign languages.
Basic All-round (6 months - 1yr): Should you want to reach a basic minimum all-round level, you can opt for a comprehensive instruction which provides an excellent foundation in Chinese.
Vocabulary Intensive (1yr+): If you're not able to spend time in China learning the language but you want to improve consistently over the longer term and reach a decent standard, you can opt for vocabulary intensive instruction. Besides developing the basics in the language, from an early stage emphasis will be placed on rapidly developing your vocabulary.
Basic Streamlined - no character learning (under 6months): For those who don't have time to learn characters, but still want to learn the basics.
Supplementary Tutoring: I can also assist students who are already on a Chinese course, be it at Secondary School, 6th Form, or in Higher Education.
(Timeframe based on having one weekly 80minute lesson + homework. Supplementary lessons taught hourly.)
My qualifications
1. I am a non-native Chinese speaker. Having learnt the language from scratch up to fluency I've done it all before; I know all the challenges involved and I also know how to overcome them.
2. I learnt Chinese using the best methods taught at the best universities. This means I know which teaching resources to use and which teaching methods to apply, ensuring that you will learn Chinese in the most efficient way possible.
3. I am a good linguist. I have the highest Chinese language proficiency score recorded at my university (see attached HSK certificate). I have also subsequently learnt other languages including Sanskrit and German.
4. I have rich experience as a teacher. Not only in teaching Chinese but also in teaching English and as a tennis coach.
5. I get pleasure from teaching and I enjoy seeing my students improve. Besides the hard work you will put in, I know your improvement will be dependent on me providing the best tuition possible, helping you to maintain your interest and seeing you through the difficult challenges ahead.
I hold one-2-one and small group lessons for beginners on Mon-Thurs, evenings only. My rates are competitive. Please message for details.
