Freelance (science) writer and editor

Alcester, United Kingdom
is currently working on a press release and sales letter for a frozen yogurt company

About Me

I am an intelligent, well educated young woman with a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. After graduating in 2004 with an upper 2nd class honours degree (score 68.9%), I took a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and worked as a Biology teacher in a prestigious boarding grammar school for two years. Following this I decided to take some time out for myself and spent the next year travelling the world, before returning to the UK and choosing a change of career. Since returning from my travels I have been working in biomedical publishing, first as an editorial assistant for an online biomedical picture library, and now as a full time freelance writer and editor.

My main client is a leading biomedical publishing company based in London for whom I provide remote editorial assistance; overseeing timely peer review of scientific manuscripts, liaising with authors and editors, copyediting of texts and writing press releases. A recent press release I wrote was picked up by 3 national newspapers (UK) and a host of other science news websites!

The nature of this job requires an outstanding level of attention to detail, superb grammar, spelling and punctuation (particularly for specific, scientific language) as well as an understanding of web publishing, peer-review, pre- and post production. I have access to the full text of a wide range of journals and books through this company and so am perfectly placed to research articles for a variety of science and social science topics. I am able to write in British or American English as required and have a quick and accurate typing speed of 60 words per minute.

In addition to science writing, I also undertake general copywriting, copyediting and proofreading work. I am a freelance member of a web design company based in Trinidad and have also written and improved copy for other businesses and individuals. Recent projects have included writing for a string quartet, a fishing charter business and a web hosting firm, so you can see that my experience is varied! My full portfolio can be found on my Wordpress website - details available on request.

Unlike some of the providers on People Per Hour, I am a full time, professional freelance worker who pays tax to the UK Government. To maintain this level of professionalism and to cover both our backs, I must insist on the signing of an agreement between myself and the buyer - a generic copy of this agreement, which also requires the buyer to provide full, valid contact details, can be delivered on request. If you are not interested in keeping things "above board",then sorry, neither am I interested in you. Apologies to sound so negative, but scams abound! As this is my career, I simply cannot afford, either in monetary terms or in terms of my reputation, to get involved with any project that condones cheating (e.g. student assignments), copyright theft, or sloppy affiliate marketing (e.g. those buyers who hire people to write or rewrite poor copy for a dollar per article to dump on a landing page loaded with dishonourable pay-per-click links).

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. As a professional writer and editor, I choose the projects I bid on very carefully, and welcome invitations from honest buyers looking for high quality work. I am available for all kinds of writing projects, particularly but not limited to copywriting and copyediting of a biomedical nature. A good writer is a good writer, and as well as writing about environmental and scientific themes, I have previously worked for a marketing company, a self-help website, a transcription agency, non-fiction publishing and the education sector.

Job Reviews on PPH

by Zoltan B on 27 Aug 2009

The quality and professionalism of Lisa's work was excellent. She understood the project brief, utilised the source materials effectively (and found additional sources too) and structured the writing intelligently. Very pleased.

Work Experience

I started my career as a teacher of Biology, Chemistry and Personal, Social and Health Education at a boarding grammar school in Kent, but after a period of travelling I decided to change direction and now work in Science publishing. I began at BioMed Central as the only editorial assistant of the Biology Image Library, an online database of images from scientific research. I had sole responsibility for this website and was in charge of sourcing images from scientists all over the world, copyediting the image descriptions (and the images themselves using Photoshop), overseeing the peer review of images and publishing them to the website. I have recently left the Biology Image Library and now continue to work for BioMed Central on a freelance basis as an editorial assistant for the journal side of the business. I oversee manuscripts in the core "BMC series" from submission, through peer review and editing, to the pre-acceptance stage.

In addition, I also work as a freelance press officer for BioMed Central and write press releases on newsworthy articles that we publish. Writing a press release involves reading and understanding complex scientific articles and summarising them in an engaging way that is not only accessible to the public, but is also catchy enough to attract the eye of news editors at media sources. Recently, a press release that I wrote received coverage in 3 national newspapers and on many other news websites, so I must be doing something right!

As well as work for BioMed Central, I also take on work from external clients. Recent projects through People Per Hour or other freelance websites have included copywriting for a cosmetic surgery website, writing articles for 2 different environmental websites, contributing to an e-book on anti-ageing. I am also currently copyediting a book and I blog on my website, the address of which I am not allowed to give out here, but if you search for me on Wordpress you might find me!

Lisa provided articles that were well above my expectations. She researched the subject matter well and provided genuinely engaging material. I was concerned about hiring writers through the net due to the large amount of rubbish that is recycled, but I was very happy with the results from her. Tom Humphries Web Editor Our Green Earth

Education

I have a 2:1 honours degree (68.9%) in Biological Sciences from the University of Warwick, where I studied a variety of modules including cell biology, microbiology, ecology, environmental management, oncology, endocrinology, plant biology, genetics and more. There I also completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Although already well-developed, I have certificates proving my proficiency in Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology. I have also undertaken in-house proof-reading and editorial training at BioMed Central and consider myself well qualified, intelligent, hard-working, quick to learn and ambitious for success.
