About Me

Writing is a powerful medium and I pride myself on my ability to tailor work specifically to the audience. I do not believe that \"one size fits all\".

I have 20 years\' experience as a writer, 15 of which were on a busy, daily regional paper. I moved from newsdesk to features, adapting my skills contiunously. As well as page designing, subbing, proofreading, I commissioned articles and wrote on a myriad subjects: from 50 word captions to 1,500 word features.

Those skills have stood me in good stead for my freelancing career.

Journalism: able to write in a style to suit many publicationsweb; specialism in feature writing (human interest; profiles; in-depth interviews); children\'s book reviewer (expertise in the genre); former travel editor. News-editing and commissioning.

Copywriter: commissioned by a university to write copy, including SEO compatible writing, for its new website. Completed a sizeable interviewing and writing project for a brochure for the same university.

Commissioned by a city council to write a brochure for its prestigious annual awards. Speech writer for the comedian who was hosting the ceremony.

PR: 2009 press officer for the Federation of Children\'s Book Groups (publicising its Red House Book Award); commissioned by PR company to write profiles; PR experience at an established and well-respected PR company, based in Birmingham city centre.

Proofreader: have edited and proofread books for an independent publisher, as well as a photographer.

Areas covered: all - remote worker

Job Reviews on PPH

Quick and competent, made an excellent job of proof-reading. We asked for more feedback for the children's book which we received. Good job thank you.

I would recommend Jayne to anyone. She provides a first class service in good time and on budget.

Work Experience

Accomplished writer (news, including home affairs and environment specialisms, and features - lifestyle, celebrity, gardening, books, general, news features, reviews) sub editor and page designer on a very busy, daily regional newspaper. Books editor and travel editor.
Almost 20 years\' media experience.
Copy editing and PR.
Consultant writer/editor.

Visiting professional writer/mentor in schools as part of the Birmingham Book Festival\'s Write On project.

Particular interest in children\'s literature - appointed press officer for 2009 for the Federation of Children\'s Book Groups, publicising its annual Red House Children\'s Book Award.

I continue to contribute a weekly children\'s book review to the Birmingham Post, where I was children\'s book editor before being made redundant in November \'08.

When it comes to writing, I can pretty much turn my hand to anything - from a killer few paragraphs or an in-depth profile/interview - and it will always be done professionally and - most importantly - in a style that suits the audience.

I have had experience in the B2B sector on a business publication - writing and editing - and have also proofread two books for a small West Midland publisher.

I have been been commissioned by Birmingham City University to write about its creative communities, as well as copy edit other material for the organisation, and have worked as an editorial adviser to a large building firm on its tender/bidding process.

I have also been commissioned to write profiles of leading business people by a Birmingham PR company.

Jayne has worked with me to copy edit a variety of reference and children’s books, covering a wide range of issues including schools travel and climate change. It was a pleasure to work with her and she brought expert knowledge, communication and creative skills to the process. I enjoyed working with Jayne, and will be doing so again very soon. She is highly recommend.
