hello
i have written my phd proposal which should be 4000 words
title ll
Translation of the ‘Occidentalism’ from English into Arabic with Translation Commentary
i have written 3000 words and receive comments from my professor
could think about other projects which have been done as part of a practice PhD. Luise von Flotow mentioned a really interesting one at your talk on Sat, for example (the 'intersectional' translation by her student of Our Bodies Ourselves - I think the TT must be this:
https://www.amazon.com/Corps-accord-Guide-sexualit%C3%A9-positive/dp/2890916634
LvF said the PhD thesis explained the research process behind the translation). Also our colleague Anna Milsom did a fascinating practice-based PhD herself combining translation and art, and she has published on it: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/languages/milsom-anna.aspx
As we say in the FAQs about the programme, we are looking for a project which allows the student to demonstrate their professional, creative practice, as in the Creative Writing PhD or Musical Composition PhD. They should be aiming to complete an original, substantial and publishable piece of work, equivalent to a piece of original creative writing or a musical composition. The commentary should be informed by rigorous research and discuss, as appropriate, critical and creative practices.
I have had a quick look through proposal. I see that this is a ST which deserves to be translated into Arabic - makes that case well. But I am not yet convinced that it makes a suitable PhD project. I don't think we are looking for a project which is more or less just a longer version of an MA Extended Translation Project. I think we would expect something more creative/experimental/original (like the two PhD projects mentioned above) or scholarly (like a scholarly translation of a medieval text which needs specific scholarly expertise), wouldn't we?
I'm not sure TOSTA/functionalism is the best approach for a Practice-Based PhD either - TOSTA was devised for translation students to train them to think as other translators do (e.g. observing genre conventions). We surely wouldn't really expect a PhD student to be producing a 'conventional' translation - because what does that add to the discipline or what contribution does that make to creative practice? The student suggests how translation theory might inform the project, but does not engage critically with this work (some of this theory is regarded as outdated/oversimplistic), and they need to show much more convincingly what they will be adding.
i have attached
1
Occidentalism.pdf
the book Occidentalism in which i should know the best theory can be applied for translating it into arabic , this point is the most important one in which proposal based upon it
2

3
Propasal PhD.docx
i tried to follow my professor comments so review please and let me know am on the right way and after reviewing my 3000 words and edit them , add more 1000 words to complete my proposal to be 4000 words as total
finally , researcher holding master or phd in translation studies very important
know arabic language preferable
decide which theories in translation can be the perfect one for translating Occidentalism book to talk about this theory
thanks
