Description
Experience Level: Entry
This would suit somebody who is highly motivated by or with personal experience of Children with cancer.
Children and parents suddenly diagnosed with cancer or any severe illness will be in shock, fear and panic. Everybody is told to be brave. Doctors and nurses need the child to let them get on with the treatment. But the child has to put up with needles and other stuff put into them; the child will instinctively want to fight it.. Frightening machines surround them. Different strange rooms may have to be entered. Periods of waiting have to be handled. Later when hair falls out a brave face has tyo be put on. And they have to believe that they can get better.
These 6 different challenges were experienced by Josie the mum of Dexter who was diagnosed with leukemia 3 years ago at the age of 7. Josie had to deal with these 6 'states' in the first 48 hours from going into hospital with what looked like a childhood rash to full blown leukemia.
That was 3 years ago and Dexter did really well and handled the 6 states so well he was Awarded at the Wellchild awards in 2019 meeting Harry and Meghan, but it was the Dexter Superhero Poster his 19 year old aunty gave him for his birthday that sparked off an idea.
If every child could have their own Superhero with 6 superpowers(states) created at the onset of the illness it would help them to handle the challenges. Doctors, parents etc could use them to get the child into the best state possible for whatever was happening. Their superhero poster would be on 6 credit card size cards one for each state.
There are a handful of us working on this parttime but we have the website and a drag-and-drop so that the child can create on a tablet their own superhero quickly and easily, cards can be got to them within 24 hours.
We need somebody to help us with telling the world about this, checking that the right words and images are used, engaging social media etc. Because the concept will help the treatment we believe that word will spread fast.
The UK only has 1,500 childhood (under 15yrs old) cancer cases each year and CLICSargent are well on top of immediate help for families so this task isn't going to be too onerous.
We are working on the website and the drag-and-drop so it is work in progress - www.dexsheroes.co.uk
Thank you for reading this rather long task description.

PS The NHS and staff and CLICSargent have been truly amazing.
