I got my first taste of working within the industry as site crew on various events and festivals. During this... time I was able to learn about the processes behind planning events and the onsite requirements to ensure that the festivals ran smoothly. My positive experiences here led me to develop my skills by working backstage in both the hospitality and stage management departments. This experience was invaluable as I was able to develop my customer interaction skills, and learn about the technical aspects of theatre and events. Over a few years I gradually worked my way up till I became the main stage manager. This undoubtedly led to my decision to take a degree in stage management and technical theatre. Through college, I kept up my freelance work, as well as doing 6 work placements a year, and lectures! Although this kept me very busy, I was able to explore different avenues and disciplines, and learn a basic understanding of all aspects of theatre and events. I made the decision towards the end of my degree that I wanted to work in the corporate side of events and so took up the position of Events Assistant at AXA. Here I was able to develop my understanding of corporate events and was able to learn a lot from the experienced event managers around me. Having worked as a stage manager in theatre and events, I feel that both experiences have helped me to develop a rounded knowledge of technical production. My event experience has helped me to learn about the requirements of artists and speakers, and to liaise with them to create the best schedule for their needs. Working in theatre was a very different experience, but through it I developed not only technical skills, but also people skills, organisation and management. Theatre work also enabled me to develop my creative skills both in design aspects such as props and set plans, as well as in paperwork, such as risk assessments and budgets. College enabled me to explore different areas of the industry, allowing me to decide upon to route I wanted to take. I took lectures in stage management, lighting, sound, electrics, event management and stagecraft, as well as more academic subjects such as theatre history. This allowed me to learn about the technical aspects of all aspects of the industry and put them into practice in our practical lectures and work placements. My college experience also allowed me to develop aspects of my personality such as organisation, time management and people skills. Although theatre was the main focus of the course, we concentrated mainly on events during the third year. During my placements, I chose to concentrate mainly on stage management and events, as I felt this would be most beneficial for my career. I feel a lot of the processes and skills I learnt during these placements are relevant to working within the events industry, and it gave me experience in aspects such as risk assessments and budgeting. After college, I made the decision to work in corporate events, as this is the area I enjoy and work best within. Working at AXA enabled me to learn about the delegate side of organising events, which I have previously not worked in. My role at AXA is very diverse, ranging from administration roles through to working on events and email teasers for prize schemes. This experience has certainly shown my ability to put my hand to anything that is required of me. I would be grateful if you could consider me for any job opening you have at present. For four years I worked as a CAD Technician / Design Draughtsman for Scena Projects in London. I have worked on Theatre, Conference, Motorshows, Exhibitions but specialised mainly on scenic fit outs for prestigious new museums & museum galleries. One of the jobs being the fit out of the National maritime museum Cornwall in Falmouth for which Scena won the BCIA award. This involved going to site & taking as built dimensions & drawing an “Empty G.A.” I would then meet with Scena’s clients, usually interior design studios. I used AutoCAD for the 2D drawings & Mechanical desktop as a ...3D-modeling tool. If there were any structural elements, Scena had a structural engineer to advise with this. Once the designers... had approved my drawings I then ordered the materials from the various suppliers & put construction drawings out to various specialist sub-contractors & into Scena’s steel fabrication & timber workshops, keeping the pressure up on the contractors & workshops to keep to tight deadlines. The next stage was to provide installation drawings for the Scena site manager & arrange transport. Museum fit outs comprise of structures built from various materials such as Glass, Stainless steel, GRP, Plywood’s, Hardwoods, softwoods, polymers, composite panels & other materials with the highest quality of finishes. A.V. equipment & cables have to be allowed for & fitted into these objects to form interactive units. Using my Carpentry, joinery & steel fabrication knowledge & experience I would draw up all components, from small lathe turned stainless steel fittings for supporting objects within the showcases to first & second fix layouts within large galleries all done to very tight schedules. I would be left to my own devices to get the job done on time. My most recent employment was in 2010, with Springer Healthcare, a medical communications company, which unfortunately I was forced to give up about a month after joining, due to unforseen and unavoidable circumstances. Leaving that out, my most recent employment was as Assistant Editor for The British Journal of General Practice, in the Royal College of General Practitioners, London. Prior to that I worked as Project Editor in Dorling Kindersley (India) and as Science Editor in Oxford University Press (India). I resigned from my job at RCGP after my son was born, to look after him. He is now seven years old and goes to school; so, I intend to go back to work again. My husband, an NHS doctor, needs to go into research, which also makes it essential for me to start working. As such, a freelance position would be most suitable for me. Ideally I would be happy to take up a part time position working around 2-3 days a week, or else have a flexible arrangement working part of the week from home and part at the office. My experience is very apt for this job. My work involved editing, proofreading, writing and collating to a very high standard within very tight schedules all of which gave it that sense of a challenge. I have also written blurbs, content briefs, sales and marketing briefs, promotion materials, leaflets and fliers, presentation material for book promotions, etc. I have always proven to be an efficient, organised, confident worker and an enthusiastic and reliable team player. My previous jobs all involved liaising at different levels with numerous people associated with ...the project. They included authors, subject matter experts (SMEs), doctors (when working for The BJGP), school teachers, booksellers, artists, designers,... typesetters, freelancers (copyeditors and proofreaders), printers and binders. Interaction with all these people had to be appropriate, friendly and effective to achieve the best results and also to create a good working relationship. I am proficient with the use of the computer, and have worked using Quark Xpress, Word, Excel, MS Outlook and Powerpoint. Having worked very closely with designers and DTP, I am acquainted with the use of Photoshop and have a fairly trained eye to various aspects of designing. I am very quick at learning new skills on the computer. In the past seven years, as a full-time mother I believe I have been doing one of the most demanding and important jobs. It was a period which challenged my physical as well as mental capabilities. I learnt to multi-task, be creative and patient, and most of all to manage my time effectively. These have been the most challenging yet beautiful years of my life and I hope I have done my job well. Now my little boy is at school and I really look forward to going back to work. I am from India and besides English, can speak and write Hindi, Bengali and Assamese fluently, and can understand Punjabi, Urdu and Gujarati. I enjoy listening to music and reading books. I love to paint and make various kinds of decorative artwork. I am passionate about cooking and love to try out the cuisines of different countries. I have completed a course called PTLLS (Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector), and now I occasionally give evening and weekend cookery lessons on authentic Indian home-cooking.
