In May 2010 I completed my third year of a B.A. Hons in Professional Floristry at Writtle College, Chelmsford, graduating with a 2:1 degree. As I was a student in the first class which this course has been available to, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about what the course entails and the skills and knowledge which it has provided me with. This degree course, is the equivalent to level 6 floristry, and great emphasis has been on in-depth experimentation with Contemporary and European design styles and techniques, as well as more traditional design. The first two years of studying, as well as practical floristry, included modules on plant production, business management, event management, advertising and promotion to name a few. During the third and final year, I studied post harvest technologies and treatment, and international trade and supply, along with writing my dissertation paper, and ...continuing my studies in practical floristry. Throughout my education I was also working in the industry in a local florist... in my area. This was fantastic for industry experience, building my confidence and achieving good commercial speed in my work. I was taken on as a junior florist, however after two years I was one of only two full time florists taking on all the responsibilities of the day to day running of the shop. After learning all that I could from that experience I decided to look for the opportunity to be work in a more exciting environment based in London. In January 2011 I began full time work for the Real Flower Company in Selfridges, however in better control over my working life and allow myself more freedom to experience a variety of working environments I am now working part time and freelance, I am very hard working and have good time keeping skills. I enjoy working as part of a team, which I also feel gives me valuable experience. I work well under instruction but also have a good initiative to get work done under my own steam.
